  • 3. WHAT IS EI?  The awareness of and ability to manage one's emotions in a healthy and productive manner.
  • 4. WHY EI? Effective leaders are all alike in one crucial way: “they all have a high degree of emotional intelligence”
  • 5. The Five Components of EI at Work  Self-Awareness.  Self-Regulation.  Motivation.  Empathy.  Social Skills.
  • 6. SELF-AWARENESS  What is self-awareness?  The ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, strength, weaknesses, needs and drivers.  How can one recognize self-awareness?  Realistic self-assessment.  Self-confidence.  Self-deprecating sense of humor.
  • 7. SELF-REGULATION  What is self-regulation?  The ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods.  Why does it matter so much for leaders?  Trustworthiness, integrity, fairness.  Comfort with ambiguity& Openness to change.
  • 8. MOTIVATION  What is Motivation?  A passion for work for reasons that go beyond money or status.  Key characteristics of leaders:  Strong drive to achieve.  Optimism even in the face of failure.  Organizational commitment.
  • 9. EMPATHY  What is Empathy?  The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people.  Understanding and considering employees’ feelings in the process of making intelligent decisions.  Why is it important?  The increasing use of teams.  The rapid pace of globalization.
  • 10. SOCIAL SKILLS  What is Social Skills?  Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks.  Key characteristics of leaders:  High ability to find common ground and build rapport.  Persuasiveness.  Expertise in building and leading teams.
  • 11. Can EI Be Learned?  Absolutely—but not with traditional training programs that target the rational part of the brain.  Extended practice, feedback from colleagues, and your own enthusiasm for making the change are essential to becoming an effective leader.
  • 12. IE Applicability for Syrian Companies  Classical ways of choosing leaders:  Family business: founder is leader.  Seniority.  Others: the level of education, references and relations.  Developing new ways:  Competency models to help identifying, training, and promoting likely stars in the leadership firmament.  IE tests.
