Liz Barclay on the Radio 4 show “A Small Business” suggests that company owners should go for their dreams and damn the recession.
However, many of the businesses that succeed during recessions owe their fate to luck more than good planning and research.

Some Recession Statistics
Of 4.7m UK businesses only 6,000 or 0.13% hire more than 250 people.
So there are 99.87% SMEs or Sole Traders.
If you’re starting a small business, you’re already in the majority.
Small businesses account for 60% of employment and 50% of turnover.
A huge economic contributor.

The Bad News (And Some Good)
We are losing some 700 SMEs a week as they can not meet their obligations.
However, the recession hasn’t dampened our dogged determination to succeed.
With every one that fails, another 11 are set up.

Recession-busting businesses don’t need to make massive profits, they just need to defy the odds.
There’s an ego boost being able to start a company and survive in such difficult times.
We are thought to be more risk averse now than before the recession.

Its Good For The Soul
The experiences we’ve had during the recession will stand us in good stead when the good times return (well some of us).
We may tend to become less reliant on the banks for financing and may be inclined to seek more imaginative sources of start-up or expansion finance.
