  2. 2. A food chain is a way of describing how animals and plants feed on one another. It shows direct feeding relationships between plants and animals. Each food chain begins with a plant and ends with an animal. In any ecosystem there are several food chains.

  4. 4. A food web shows animals and plants that live in an ecosystem. Several food chains are shown on a food web. The web shows the relationship between the food chains it contains.

  6. 6. Plants are called producers because they make their own food. They do not need to feed on any other plant or animal.
  7. 7. Some animals only eat plants. They are called primary consumers. They are also called herbivores because they only eat plants.
  8. 8. Some animals eat herbivores. They are called secondary consumers. They are also called carnivores, because they eat meat.
  9. 9. Some animals eat either animals or plants. They are called omnivores. .
  10. 10. Animals that eat secondary consumers are the top of the food chain. They are called tertiary consumers.
