Digital channels, the change in community structures and its consequences for social participation - Presentation Transcript

    1. Digital channels, the change in community structures and its consequences for social participation
      Andreas Jungherr
      Bamberg University
    2. The Argument:
    3. Political participation & collective action depend on local community structures
    4. Change in community structures leads to change in the modes of political participation
    5. The Question?
    6. What does this mean for political organizers?
    7. The situation:
    8. Change in community structures is constant
    9. In developed countries one of the biggest changes in community structures has been initiated through:
    10. Lower cost of travel
    11. Ever increasing specialization and isolation of work
    12. Local disconnection through frequent work-related travel
    13. Digital communication
    14. In short:
    15. People could escape theDictate of Geography
    16. New communities form around:
    17. Communities of practice
    18. Communities of interest
    19. Communities of location lose influence
    20. How does this change political organizing?
    21. Granovetter‘s ties:
    22. Strong tiesvsWeak ties
    23. Strong ties: The acquaintances of a person are also acquainted with one another
    24. Weak ties: The acquaintances of a person are not acquainted with one another
    25. Strong ties lend themselves easily to political organizing.
    26. Weak ties...not so much
    27. Weak ties lend themselves to the distribution of news
    28. Small world hype
    29. The Conjecture:
    30. People who are connected in communities of practice or interest through weak ties are difficult to move to collective action
    31. Right?
    32. Twitter-Activism
    33. Low-cost, consequence free: Activism as lifestyle
    34. Still...
    35. The potential:
    36. Political organizers and campaigns which manage to provide digital communities with a local backbone have a huge potential
    37. Examples:myobama.comteAM Deutschland
    38. These campaigns try to connect the fast information distribution through weak ties with the possibility for collective action of strong ties.
    39. Once again, the future is local!
