  2. 2. VASILE ALECSANDRI Poet, playwright, politician and diplomat, he collected Romanian folk songs and was one of the main animators of the 19 th century movement for Romanian cultural identity and Union of Moldavia and Wallachia.
  3. 3. GEORGE BACOVIA <ul><li>He was a Romanian symbolist poet. While he initially belonged to the Symbolist movement, his poetry came to be seen as a precursor of Romanian Modernism and eventually established him in critical esteem alongside Tudor Arghezi, Lucian Blaga and Ion Barbu as one of the most important interwar Romanian poets. </li></ul>

Even though she died of tuberculosis at the age of 18, Iulia achieved more than most people in an entire lifetime. Thus she wrote poems and prose, taught herself foreign languages and studied piano and canto. She was the first Romanian girl-student at La Sorbonne University in Paris. In her honour, her father built the controversial Iulia Hasdeu Castle in Câmpina, Romania. She was born in Bucharest and also died in the same city. </li></ul>
