Before making wudu, one should use the toilet if needed, clean between the fingers with istinja after using the toilet. One should also remove any nail polish, hair extensions, or tight jewelry that may prevent water from reaching the skin. It is recommended to clean the teeth with a siwak stick before wudu. The steps of wudu then involve washing different body parts like the hands, arms, face, head and feet with the intention of purification.
2. THINGS TO DO BEFORE
MAKING WUDU YOU MIGHT
NOT HAVE KNOWN
3. USE THE TOILET
Beforemaking wudu if one needs to
use the toilet, they should since the
Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa-sallam
said:
"No prayer can be rightly said...
when he [the worshipper] is
prompted by the call of nature."
(Sahih Muslim, [Eng. Trans. vol. 1
#1139])
4. If you have used the
toilet you need to make
istanja and wash your
hands before making
wudu (***using the
toilet is recommended
and making istanja
afterwards is obligatory
or salah is not valid).
5. REMOVE ANYTHING FROM YOUR
BODY THAT MIGHT INVALIDATE YOUR
WUDU
Before making wudu, if one is wearing nailpolish
or fake nails, they must be removed, because the
water will not touch the hand in its entirety so the
wudu will be incomplete and any following salah
will be invalid.
Hair extensions, wigs, fake eyelashes, and eyelash
extensions fall under the same category as fake
nails. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala knows best, and it
is the majority opinion that is safer to refrain from
using any of the previous mentioned.*** This also
means removing rings or any jewellery that are so
tight to the skin that water cannot reach it.
7. CLEAN YOUR TEETH/USE A SIWAAK
STICK
Before making wudu it is mustahaab
(recommended) that you clean your teeth.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with
him), reported that the Prophet (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Were it
not for the fact that I did not want to make
things too hard for my ummah, I would have
commanded them to use the siwaak at every
time of prayer.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 2/299
and Muslim, 1/151). According to another report
narrated by al-Bukhaari, he said: “…at every
time of making wudoo’.”
10. Make Niyaat (intention) to preform wudu
Mention the name of Allah by saying: “Bismillah-
Hir-Rahma-Nir-Rahim”
Wash both hands up to the wrists together three
times, ensuring that every part including between
the fingers is wet.
11. Take a handful of water into the mouth & rinse the
mouth three times.
12. Snuff water contained in the right palm into the
nose and then eject the water with the left hand
(thrice).
13. Wash the face, ear to ear, forehead to chin three
times.
14. Wash the right arm thoroughly from the wrist to
the elbow three times. Repeat the same with the
left arm.
15. Run moistened hands over the head from the
forehead to the back and back to the forehead
(once).
16. Run moistened fingers through the ears, the first
finger of each hand going across the inside of the
corresponding ear, while the thumb runs across
the outside (once).
17. Wash both feet up to the ankles starting from the
right and ensuring that all parts particularly
between the toes are wet.
18. This process ends with the recitation of the
Kalimatus-Shahadah (words of proclaiming faith).
ASH-HADU ALLAH ILAHA ILLALLAHU WA-AS-HADU AN-
NA MUHAMMADAN ABDUHU-WA-RASULUH.
