In a 2012 IDC study, researchers found that customers who migrated to AWS broke even in just seven months and experienced a 626% five-year return on investment. Furthermore, public sector customers’ typical migration needs make this even easier, faster, and more cost effective. Learn how to identify the best workloads to move, the logistics of this transition (“lift-and-shift” or a phased approach), and the benefits your organization will experience from day one.

  • AWS sees customers taking four different paths to AWS adoption. This talk is focused on migration of existing apps and data, aka Lift and Shift, but lets talk very briefly about a couple of the other paths.
  • Integrating AWS to on-premises IT Network. Today, Cloud not only understand the dynamics of the internal network but also enhances the capabilities so you extend your datacenter to the cloud. They do so using a range of new enterprise focused services including software appliances, Amazon VPC which is now, due its popularity, the underlying network isolation fabric for all of EC2 fleet. Customers can have secure VPN tunnel combined with a private dedicated network and share the same IP address range. They can connect multiple branch offices through customer gateways and at the same time leverage the distributed services that have access from only the closed carved out part of the cloud. They have full control of route tables, IP tables, virtual routers, creating public and private subnets and decide the right encryption approach to secure data at rest and in transit.
  • With augmentation, you’re dipping your toe in the water with new workloads – taking advantage of new capabilities, usually resource-intensive capabilities, by launching those in AWS instead of buying hardware and hiring expertise and launching them on premise.
  • Building with the cloud architecture in mind, these greenfield applications are built with newer web frameworks, and design principles, they are easier to manage/operate and easier scaling out horizontally and less expensive to run because they can sleep at night, they fail over automatically. For example, Consumer apps division of Autodesk that provides 3D design applications are all built and designed for the cloud. The most important benefit to enterprises is speed and agility. Ability to release software quickly, get feedback and iterate quickly without any constraints is the one of the most
  • Those paths can save you money, they can evolve your organizations capabilities… but what about the low hanging fruit? The “easy wins”? That’s the Lift and Shift bucket – migrating your existing apps and data (aka workloads) to the cloud.

  • Why migrate? Lots of reasons – here are a few customers experiences with economics, agility, and performance. Unilever has 1000 websites, out of which they have migrated 500 to AWS. Using AWS, now they can deploy web sites in 2 days instead of 2 weeks. Or Bristol Myers Squibb, which migrated its clinical trial simulation platform to AWS. Now these simulations take 72 minutes compared to 60 hrs. earlier.
  • Perhaps the best thing about migration is that it is minimally disruptive to your organization. It leverages skills you already know, just with different terms. You run a directory service already, and understand permissions and groups and hierarchies – those skills apply to AWS. Your network configuration skills apply to AWS. You need, use, and understand encryption, and AWS has it. You have backups and archives, and the policies and procedures and play books that drive them – there’s a lot of overlap with AWS.

There are new things to learn, but not as much as you might think.
  • I can reuse my skills, great. I can connect my data centers to AWS, great. And I like the idea of lift-and-shift…it sounds so easy! What can I lift-and-shift?
  • OK, I’ve decided that EMAIL is my most important, most capital intensive, highest SLA app. What do I do?

  • http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx
    Use the AWS CLI
Contact AWS Support to move them to AWS GovCloud
  • Move your data through the pipe directly to AWS GovCloud (US)
Use AWS Storage Gateway as an interface to US West and then move the data to AWS GovCloud
Use AWS Import/Export via US West and then move the data to AWS GovCloud
  • Lift and Shift is easier, faster, and still provides great benefits to customers. Some apps live in both places. Some are better on one side than the other…

  • So to leave you with a little cue sheet, there are “roll your own” tools and capabilities on the left – everything we already talked about – DX, VPN, Disk2VHD and so on.
In the context of this syposium, though, I want to remind and encourage you to walk the halls and meet our great AWS partners, companies that provide technology solutions and software tools and companies that provide consulting services and expertise – all ready, willing and able to help you migrate your workloads to AWS GovCloud (US).

    Thanks!
