      • Anyone can “experience” QlikView at any time
      • We need to ensure a great first-time user experience
      • We currently use Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
      • and Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)
  • Demo.qlikview.com – Before EC2
      • 3 Servers and 1 NAS
      • Located and managed in Sweden
Server Setups as of December 2008
    • Needs
      • Performance
        • Anywhere in the globe (Not only in Sweden)
      • Scalability
        • Supporting all users (+/- Servers)
      • Reliability
        • Supporting 24/7 environment
        • Quick Disaster Recovery
      • Quick Environment Switch
        • Downtime is at minimum
        • (or almost to none)
    Demo.qlikview.com – Before EC2
  • Demo.qlikview.com – Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
    • Performance
      • Three regions
        • US – East Coast, North America
        • EU – Ireland
        • Asia – Singapore
      • Geo Location components used
        • Linux Debian 5.0 (Lenny) – Operating system
        • Bind 9.3 – DNS Server system
        • GeoIP Database – Contains the database of IP addresses and country mapping
        • Perl – Used to generate a BIND ACL from the GeoIP database
  • Demo.qlikview.com – Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
    • Scalability
      • Servers are up and running only when needed
        • Scale Up
          • Watching the CPU usage every 5mins and when it hits 25%, propose a scale up of a server
          • 15 minute wait time between scale up proposal if already awaiting or just scaled up
        • Scale Down
          • When network utilization is less than 2.5%
          • Removed from cluster prior to scale down to ensure new sessions only sent to live server
          • Minimum 4hrs up if network activity stays below threshold
  • Demo.qlikview.com – Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
    • Reliability
      • Fast to start up another instance of a server if/when needed
      • Scaling group
        • by Region (US, EU, APAC)
        • Min 1 Max 4 large servers in normal time in each region
        • Weekend 1 in the US and no other regions
        • Sunday night, launch 3 regions servers at least 1 server each and auto scale up from there if needed using ec2 api’s.
  • Demo.qlikview.com – Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)
    • Quick Environment Change
      • During Global Online Campagin – Emails to go out with a link to a demo
        • Instead of using west coast , switched to Singapore environment
          • for faster access to APAC users
        • Instead of Large ami’s, switched to X-Large ami’s
          • to support more CPU’s and RAM usage
        • Instead of Min1 Max 4 , switched to Min 5 Max 8
          • to support the click of the link in email at the same time (concurrent users accessing the site at the same time)
