10. 10. 12 months ago...
Our web portals were having a number serious issues

50% of our business is online.
    11. 11. In a word OUCH!
    12. 12. Legacy 3rd party hosting environment
    13. 13. Environment severely overloaded
    14. 14. The support approach - reboot!
    15. 15. Scaling up - buy more hardware
    16. 16. Cost – expensive
    17. 17. Business losing patience...

So what did we do...?
Clearly things had to change.

We knew we needed
    18. 18. Absolute stability
    19. 19. Ability to scale easily
    20. 20. Fast provisioning
    21. 21. Ability to run anything our hearts desired!
    22. 22. So we reviewed
    23. 23. 2 x “Traditional” hosting offerings
    24. 24. 2 x Cloud offerings

We quickly realised...
That AWS was different from the other solutions

We were able to
    25. 25. Build servers in minutes
    26. 26. Run whatever we wanted
    27. 27. Scale on demand or on trigger
    28. 28. Create multiple layers of redundancy
    29. 29. And...
    30. 30. We were saving money
    31. 31. Even the Dev Manager was excited!

He’s a genius at PHP
32. 32. So where are we now...?

Learning portals – migrated 4 months ago
    33. 33. Test and dev environments – migrated 4 months ago
    34. 34. Marketing sites – going next
    35. 35. Other systems – waiting for VPC in Singapore

Downtime? Haven’t had any so far!
Performance? A least 3 times faster on HTTP requests
Cost? Expecting a per annum reduction around 90%!
36. 36. Things to be mindful of...
There are a lot of options

Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you should use it!

It’s hard to keep up

New functionality is coming out all the time

Network architecture

Need good internet pipe(s)

Get used to the terminology!
37. 37. Thank You
Andy Donaldson - IT Director
adonaldson@think.edu.au
au.linkedin.com/in/andyhdonaldson
