Our web portals were having a number serious issues
    • 50% of our business is online.
    • In a word OUCH!
    • Legacy 3rd party hosting environment
    • Environment severely overloaded
    • The support approach - reboot!
    • Scaling up - buy more hardware
    • Cost – expensive
    • Business losing patience...
  • So what did we do...?
    Clearly things had to change.
    • We knew we needed
    • Absolute stability
    • Ability to scale easily
    • Fast provisioning
    • Ability to run anything our hearts desired!
    • So we reviewed
    • 2 x “Traditional” hosting offerings
    • 2 x Cloud offerings
  • We quickly realised...
That AWS was different from the other solutions
    • We were able to
    • Build servers in minutes
    • Run whatever we wanted
    • Scale on demand or on trigger
    • Create multiple layers of redundancy
    • And...
    • We were saving money
    • Even the Dev Manager was excited!
    He’s a genius at PHP
  • So where are we now...?
    • Learning portals – migrated 4 months ago
    • Test and dev environments – migrated 4 months ago
    • Marketing sites – going next
    • Other systems – waiting for VPC in Singapore
Downtime? Haven’t had any so far!
Performance? A least 3 times faster on HTTP requests
Cost? Expecting a per annum reduction around 90%!
  • Things to be mindful of...
There are a lot of options
    • Just because it’s there doesn’t mean you should use it!
    It’s hard to keep up
    • New functionality is coming out all the time
    Network architecture
    • Need good internet pipe(s)
    Get used to the terminology!
  • Thank You
