33. 36. Q & A

Q: How do I reach more people locally?

A: Join groups and pages within your community. There is a Facebook group / page for most clubs and businesses. Look for people and organizations that share your beliefs and inspire you.

Actively grow your social network by connecting with people you meet face-to-face by following up with a friend request.

    34. 37. Q & A

Q: If I do nothing else, which platform should I use?

A: This really depends on your goals but in terms of sheer volume Facebook has the most users and people spend the most time on this social network. This could of course change at any time.

That said, if there’s another platform you enjoy using—that will be a better fit for you. You also might find that you have more success with one platform over another because it connects better with your prospective volunteers or donors.

    35. 38. Q & A

Q: How do I get more fans and followers?

A: Experiment to see what they like. Which posts do people “like,” share, and leave comments on? Our community loves photos and playfulness. They also like to share their wisdom so most of the time they respond when we ask for their opinions.

Put some time and thought into cultivating your community by cheering your followers on and responding when they ask for help/information. Reshare their content and try to build a relationship.

    36. 39. Q & A

Q: How do I optimize social media use across multiple social media platforms?

A: There are a ton of social media tools out there. We use HootSuite ( http://hootsuite.com/ ) because we can share accounts with multiple people, it has mobile versions, and they offer a free version for up to 3 users. Most tools do offer a free trial version so you can see which one you like best.

Here’s a post on some tools: http://www.atlargeinc.com/blog/2011/08/15/8-tools-to-measure-your-social-media-relevance/

    37. 40. Q & A

Q: When do I use email as opposed to Facebook?

A: You can use them together. A lot of email tools now have share buttons on email articles and many times the articles or videos within a newsletter actually link out to content on social media sites.

If you send out a Facebook message it will probably be much shorter than an email so your message will have to be more precise.

On both mediums, you want to avoid sending multiple messages on the same day or every day.

    38. 41. Q & A

Q: How do I begin using Facebook?

A: Begin by opening an account on http://www.facebook.com/ and connecting with people and organizations you like and support.

You can import your email address book to find additional friends and Facebook has a friend suggestion tool.

Here’s a how to video to get started: http://www.ehow.com/video_2201966_register-join-facebookregister-join-facebook.html

    39. 42. Q & A

Q: How to do it all easily?

A: Don’t do it all. Find the social media platform you like the most and use it. There are tools like Google Alerts and EVERNOTE that can help you find things that you’re interested in and of course following organizations and people that are meaningful to you will make using social media more fun and it will feel easier;)
