To know the effects on government and the economy of India. </li></li></ul><li>SCOPE OF THE REPORT<br />The report aims to find the causes and effects of 2G scam<br />It is shaped for the infamous 2G scam, which occurred in 2008<br /> It is confined to monitor what kind of problems the Government is currently facing<br />The analysis is descriptive in nature<br />It examines the corruption and discrimination involved among the politicians and media <br />
  6. 6. WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT ?<br /><ul><li>Spectrum was given at lower prices and older rates
  7. 7. Additional spectrum was given to some players
  8. 8. A. Raja portrayed favoritism in allotting the spectrum
  9. 9. New players with no experience were allowed to bid for the spectrum</li></li></ul><li><ul><li>Open license regime in 2007
  10. 10. Cut-off date was 1st October but fake cut-off date declared as 25th September
  11. 11. Licenses were allotted to nine operators based on the price fixed in year 2001
  12. 12. It lead to heavy losses to the Government</li></li></ul><li>A. Raja gave 122 new licenses in January 2008 at prices fixed in 2001<br />85 of the 122 licenses allocated were illegal<br />Department of Telecommunication (DoT) failed to recover Rs. 679 crore from six operators out of the nine involved<br />DoT failed to cancel the spectrum permits of the six companies<br />

  14. 14. Allianz Infratech<br />Reliance Communication<br />Tata Communication<br />Out of the above-mentioned companies, six of them were given mobile permits despite not meeting the eligibility criteria.<br />
  15. 15. KEY INVOLVED<br />Former Telecom Minister, A. Raja<br />Leader of Opposition , ArunJaitley<br />NiraRadia, a corporate activist whose conversations with politicians and corporate entities were recorded by the government was leaked.<br />BarkhaDutt, an NDTV journalist alleged to have supported <br /> A. Raja's appointment.<br />VirSanghvi, Hindustan Times editor alleged to have edited articles to reduce the blame in the NiraRadia tapes.<br />
  16. 16. IMPACT OF THE SCAM<br />A standoff between UPA and the Opposition in the Winter session of the Parliament causing an additional loss of Rs.146 crore.<br />The Exchequer suffered a loss of Rs. 60,000 crore.<br />Principle of first come first served basis.<br />
  17. 17. Parties who acquired the licenses sold their shares with a huge profit margin.<br />Government was left with only one-sixth of the falsely created bid.<br />Loss of Rs.10,000 crore to the exchequer on Swan and Unitech licenses alone.<br />
  18. 18. FACTS AND FIGURES<br />Swan Telecom sold 45% of its stake to UAE’s Telecom operator Etisalat at $900 million.<br />Unitech paid only 1651 crore as the license fees and later sold 60% of its stake to Norway’s Telenor.<br />The exchequer overall suffered a loss of Rs. 60,000 crore. <br />
  19. 19. LIMITATIONS<br />With regard to the involvement of bureaucrats and media, it does not go deep into the leakage of the <br /> well-known radio tapes.<br />It does not analyze the facts of the scam which the Government has not disclosed yet.<br />
  20. 20. CONCLUSION<br />Adverse effect on Economy.<br />Slowdown in Equity Investments.<br />Lack of transparency creating speculations.<br />Dip in revenue by 40% in 2010.<br />
