This document discusses five trends in scholarship and collaboration that require open data approaches: 1. Molecular science problems have become more complex, as have other scientific problems 2. The rise of "big data" has resulted in extremely large datasets 3. The internet has impacted science by enabling new forms of collaboration 4. There is a growing emphasis on "team science" with collaboration between researchers 5. To study modern scholarship, open data is needed regarding scholarship activities, including persistent identifiers for people, publications, organizations, and the connections between them. Common data models and an engaged community are also important.
