Audience Audience Presentation Transcript

  • Audience by Lewis and Alix
  • Genre
    • A genre is a category of media text. They are made up of a formula which are specific media elements/conventions. These elements/conventions make up the genre allowing the audience have expectations which will appear in a media text/film. These different types give the audience a choice enabling them to be continuously entertained meaning they won’t get bored. A genre can be seen as a guideline for producers and film critics allowing the producers to have a winning formula that has an established audience allowing them make a film that is financially safe as well as viable. They can also experiment with different types of conventions. This allows film critics to have categories and layouts of specific media texts which they can examine and study.
  • Who is the audience?
    • Gender- Scott pilgrim vs the world is mainly targeted for the male audience due to its comic book action aspects which have been seen in films like Spiderman and iron man however this film has a sub genre of romance. Romance can be seen because it’s the stereotypical role of man fighting for a women love. In this trailer it is portrayed that Scott (the protagonist of the film) has to defeat Ramona's 7 evil ex’s.
    • Race- The race of the film is directed towards white males mainly however there are other suggestions which implicate that other races.
    • Age- Scott pilgrim targets the usual age most films are targeted towards which is 16-25 years old. This is because you see in the trailer that the actors are in that age group.
    • Socio-economic Status- E-C1 due to the trailer being set in house parties, run down clubs and you see the characters dressed in plain clothes.
  • Psychographic Profiling
    • The trailer of Scott pilgrim vs the world portrays comic book aspects giving the audience expectations of many fight scenes along with humour. The film is based upon a graphic novel and gives the impression of a love story at the beginning of the trailer “Have you ever met someone, you love so much, that it hurts?”
    • The film addresses the audience’s fans of the graphic novel as well as people who enjoy films like Spiderman and films of that genre because they are popular.
    • According to Young and Rubicam’s cross-cultural consumer characteristics, “Scott Pilgrim vs The World” would be targeted towards mainstreamers (this is the largest section of the market with 40% being mainstreamers).
    • With Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the trailer addresses the love/belonging section playing on the characters need to have a healthy relationship with his girlfriend. The trailer shows sexual intimacy between the couple.

    • The Plot would interest him because its something new
    • It gives the impression that’s there’s going to be a lot of senseless violence in the film.
    • Its from the Director of “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hotfuzz” and both of which are amazing films.
    • It has the stereotypical “fight the bad guy to win the girl” storyline.
    • It’s a Romance film as well meaning it appeals to girls so he could take a date.
    • Its looks like an enjoyable film filled with action and
    • adventure, and these are media elements that most
    • people enjoy watching.
  • What does it offer to the audience?
    • The Uses and Gratification Theory
    • This is a theory which counters the view that audiences are easily brainwashed and instead states that the audience “actively consume the media to gratify their needs” meaning that audiences are able to accept and rejects different media messages as well use the media for a variety of reasons.
    • There are four major categories which the media serve to gratify.
    • Diversion- Or also referred to as Escapism which is a form of escape from everyday pleasure.
    • Personal relationships- friendship through personalities and characters as well sociability through discussion about television with other people.
    • Personal Identity- Being able to relate to a character through their scenarios within the media, allowing the exploration of personal problems and perspectives.
    • Surveillance- Information gathering about what’s new in the world. The media helps people to informed about the world and clarify what we already know about it.
  • How does that fit in with the Scot Pilgrim VS the World trailer
    • Diversion- The Scott Pilgrim trailer shows aspects of being an escapist fantasy filled with adventure and comedy allowing the audience to momentarily escape from reality leaving all their everyday pressures in order to enjoy the what seems to be action-packed film.
    • Personal Identity-With the romantic concept of the film and having to defeat the 7 evil ex’s in order for the characters to maintain a relationship; audience members could possibly relate to the characters in having an ex-boyfriend cause problems within a past or current relationship and watch in excitement/curiosity how they resolve their dilemma.
    • Personal Relationships-The characters within the trailer seem social because you see the protagonists at a house party.
    • Surveillance-???
  • The End By the way you really should watch the film. Its Awesome 
