BATTLE OF BOYNE
Catholic King James
attempted to defeat local Protestants at
Northern Ireland but failed and was defeated by
Protestant King William of Orange.
Protestants implemented penal laws on Catholics to
assumed control of Ireland.
Ireland was divided to 2 parts in 1921 based on majority
The Catholics were still being unfairly treated Protestant
THE CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANTS SAW THEMSELVES AS 2
DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE. THEIR DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES
TOWARDS RELIGION AND OTHER BELIEFS MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO
SEE EYE TO EYE. THIS CAUSED TENSION WHICH WOULD LEAD TO CONFLICT.
DIVIDED LOYALTIES, UNEQUAL ALLOCATION OF HOUSING, LACK OF
VOTING RIGHTS, LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIAL
INTERACTION AND UNEQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE
FACTORS WHICH CAUSED THE CONFLICT IN NORTHERN IRELAND.
THIS ALSO LED TO CATHOLICS TO HAVE A DIFFICULT CHANCE OF
HAVE PROMOTIONS OR GETTING A RAISE
As well paid jobs were given to Protestants
This caused their standard of living to be affected
due to their financially poor position as they are

THE TROUBLES IS A TERM REFERRING TO THE CONFLICTS IN NORTHERN IRELAND BETWEEN
PROTESTANTS AND CATHOLICS. ONE OF THE MANY SITUATIONS WAS WHEN THE CATHOLICS CALLED ON
THE IRA (IRISH REPUBLIC ARMY), WHICH RESORTED TO VIOLENCE FOR HELP AFTER BEING ATTACKED
BY THE PROTESTANTS. MORE THAN 3500 PROTESTANTS WERE KILLED DURING THE CONFLICTS. THE IRA
WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR TWO THIRD OF THEIR DEATHS.
THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT, GOVERNMENT OF IRISH REPUBLIC OF
IRELAND, THE IRA AND NORTHERN IRELAND COMMUNITY
MEMBERS CAME TO A PEACE AGREEMENT. THEY GOT PEACE AND
THE CONFLICT BETWEEN CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANTS WOULD
CEASE. THE PATH TO PEACE WAS ENTIRELY NOT A SMOOTH ONE.
UNDERLYING DISCRIMINATION AND PREJUDICES
STILL EXIST IN NORTHERN IRELAND, AND
OCCASIONALLY THERE STILL ARE CLASHES GOING
ON BETWEEN CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANTS IN
