Alice cadenhead - Type Specemin - Initial Ideas Presentation
Font: Mrs Eaves Alice Cadenhead
Mrs Eaves is a revival font of John Baskerville’s typeface, named after Baskerville’s live in housekeeper, Sarah Eaves, whom he later married. The font is traditional yet updated; it’s elegant and interesting. Loose, soft and open are key concepts that I plan to create my book around. I also plan to have the book tell the story hidden behind the font.
Zuzana Licko, the font designer herself - just for designing the font! When I was introduced to this font ideas instantly came flooding to me. Sarah Eaves’ story of going from housekeeper, to mistress, towife and typographic helper. This has inspired me to address to book as a tale, and bringing the font to life.
So far, research has been my main source of inspiration. It has unveiled all sorts of ideas, and allowed my initial ideas to be more focused. Focusing on the typefaces’ assets, e.g. Loose spacing, open, soft, has allowed me to establish how I want the layout of my book to portray the font.
I plan to develop the style of the book more. Perhaps byembossing or raising the type of the book, reinforcing the idea of bringing the type to life. I intend my finished product to convey, not only the meaning behind the typeface, but its unique style as well.
