On leaving office, he undertook several major international assignments, continuing his previous work in international peace-mediation and conflict resolution. These post-presidential activities included acting as the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, facilitating the peace process between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement and for three years Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Kosovo. As a former Irish Prime Minister (Taoiseach), John helped transform the Irish economy into one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
