1. Asthma Patient Care
Asthma Awareness Week took place at the beginning of May and served to raise awareness of asthma and
how it can be managed. With over five million people having been diagnosed with asthma in the UK alone,
this is something which affects a significant percentage of the country’s population. Pharmacy Technicians
can play a vital role in educating their patients on asthma care, as well as the benefits of drug therapy.
Having an asthma attack can be an extremely alarming experience and, despite improvements in asthma
medicine, the consequences can still sometimes be fatal. However, in recent years, Pharmacy Technicians
throughout the UK have come to play an increasingly active role in helping patients to manage their asthma.
It is often those working in community pharmacies that will be given the responsibility of educating patients
with asthma on how to use an inhaler correctly. Asthma inhalers are one of the most effective ways of
administering asthma medicine, but only if they are used correctly. Pharmacists are able to teach patients
with asthma, of all ages, how they should be using their inhaler in order to manage and treat their condition
effectively.
2. Pharmacy Technicians are also able to offer asthma patients counselling services and
reassuring advice regarding the positive impact of drug therapy. For those living with even mild asthma, this
can be an extremely valuable service.
Although there is no cure for asthma, new research commissioned by Boots UK has highlighted the fact that,
through support and encouragement, those who have asthma can learn to better manage their condition,
resulting in significant improvements to their health and wellbeing. Consequently, Boots UK have recently
launched a new asthma support programme to help asthma patients to take control of their condition.
Peter Bainbridge, Director of Pharmacy at Boots UK, says, “An easily accessible conversation with a trained
Boots UK pharmacist can empower patients to take control of their asthma, helping to manage their
symptoms and take their medication correctly. The new programme builds upon the support that our
pharmacists are already offering people with asthma via the New Medicines Service (NMS) and Medicine
Use Reviews (MURs) and will complement the services already provided by GPs and nurses. It will also
enable pharmacists to make relevant clinical interventions and onward referrals, where appropriate.”
The new programme will ensure that pharmacists continue to be a valuable resource to asthma patients
who are looking for ways to improve the treatment and management of their asthma.
