Editor's Notes
Cleantech Open is the world’s oldest and largest cleantech startup accelerator. We recognize that there are many entrepreneurs in this industry with great ideas that may not have the tools, resources, or connections to succeed as quickly as they might if they were connected with these assets. We try to fill this void by providing cleantech entrepreneurs mentoring, entrepreneurship education, and opportunities for high value networking and visibility, all on the platform of our annual business competition through which we give out about a quarter of a million dollars worth of prizes each year.As of early 2012 our 727 alumni had raised more than $800 million in external financing.
In terms of the types of companies we work with, we support solutions in 8 categories: Energy GenerationEnergy Distribution and StorageEnergy EfficiencyChemicals & Advanced MaterialsInformation & Communication TechnologyGreen BuildingTransportationAgriculture-Water-WasteOur goal is to be as inclusive as possible in our definition of “cleantech” – we want to work with all companies who can make the argument that their product or service is solving an energy or environmental problem. These could be everything from a new residential geothermal system, to water purification technologies used in industrial processes, to an innovative business model for solar deployment, or a web platform for customer engagement in cleantech industries.
Here in the Northeast 2012 was a phenomenal year, with 77 applicants from which we selected 39 semifinalists to participate in our most rigorous accelerator program to date! These companies worked hard with more than 175 mentors, gathered feedback from more than 60 judges, and interacted with 1000 event attendees in the Northeast alone. We also gave out more than $100,000 in cash and services prizes! Last year was also a very important year because it marked our first major regional expansion – to New York State! And New York had a fantastic showing, with 20 applicants, 11 participating companies, one of which, NYC-based Rentricity, went on to become the National Grand Prize Runner-Up! New York City was also home to Cleantech Open National Mentor of the Year, Tim Hoffman!
I think one of the greatest values that Cleantech Open offers to cleantech entrepreneurs is our robust regional and national networks. We aren’t just a business competition – we are a community building organization bringing all of the supporters of and stakeholders in cleantech entrepreneurship together under the umbrella of our programs. As you can see from this diagram, there are a tremendous number of groups who have a stake in cleantech entrepreneurship – whether they are investors, corporations, utilities or government entities. We have structured our programs as a structured platform for engagement for these stakeholders – and our national network includes thousands of people. In the Northeast Region alone in 2012 we had nearly 40 startups participating in the accelerator who had the opportunity to work with 175 mentors, more than 60 judges, and to attend networking events which saw more than 1000 total attendees throughout the program.
Few visuals demonstrate the breadth and depth of our network better than our long list of sponsors and partners: we are funded by national and regional sponsors including corporate entities and government agencies, as well as investor partners and in-kind sponsors – without these sponsors and partners we could not successfully deliver our programs.
Not only are we able to engage a large network – it’s a quality network. Everyone involved is passionate about supporting cleantech entrepreneurs in succeeding – we bring together investors, service providers, serial entrepreneurs, industry specialists and other business and government leaders – all of whom have done deals, worked with startups, and want to help entrepreneurs succeed quickly.
And, one thing that is definitely worth noting, is that Cleantech Open is also run by an incredibly passionate and talented group of people across the region who are all volunteering their time and energy to make everything we do possible, and are also an incredible resource for our entrepreneurs.
Our volunteers are all working to run, what is the second P in our value proposition: our Programs. The way we engage our tremendous community is through our programs, all tied together on the timeline of our annual accelerator schedule, which I will overview for you in a minute. The core focus of our programs can be explained as training, mentoring, access to capital, and showcasing/visibility/high quality networkingOne of our most successful and most highly rated programs by our alumni is the mentor program: nationally there are more than 1,000 mentors participating in Cleantech Open and here in the Northeast we had more than 175 in 2012. We engage them in 2 ways – matching and events. We match mentors’ strengths to participating startups’ needs – in 2012 each of our participating companies had up to 4 mentors. These matched mentors work with the companies up to 4 hours per week throughout the accelerator/competition to think through critical strategic business questions such as customer identification and development, go-to-market strategy, financial modeling, and intellectual property – to name a few. All of the teams work on a packet of worksheets which they turn in at the end of the accelerator, and their mentors guide them every step of the way. We also engage mentors at our Business Clinics where we set up one-on-one “speed mentoring” sessions with specialists on individual topics such as legal, finance, and business model. We have 2-4 of these business clinics each year.In addition to mentoring we support our entrepreneurs through our training programs – which are valuable to all of our participating companies but ESPECIALLY to the first and second-time entrepreneurs. For all of our companies, especially those that are looking to raise capital and attract customers, participating in Cleantech Open is a great opportunity for visibility with investors and – if desired – the broader public. We have investor events including panels, receptions and speed-networking, as well as more than 100 showcasing opportunities and press exposure
In terms of how this all happens chronologically, this is how the year breaks down –First the focus is on getting the word out – we have just completed 4 kick off events across the region in the past month, and have held or are planning 8 briefings like this one to get the word out to entrepreneurs across the region. Our applications are due by May 1 for entrepreneurs, May 10 for mentors, at which time we will be transitioning to a selection process. Once our companies are selected and our mentors are vetted, we move into the process of matching mentors with companies. This all starts with Mentor Mixers held the last week in May or first week in June – the goal of these speed-dating style networking events is for our companies to have the opportunity to meet local mentors, and identify those who they think they might want to work with. Requests are taken into account during the matching process, which is completed by mid-June.From there we move into what is really the bulk of our programming: the accelerator phase of mentoring and training. It all kicks off with the Academy – one held on the west coast, one on the east coast. The Academies are our 2-3 day entrepreneurship bootcamps which happen at the beginning of the accelerator and are mandatory for all semifinalists. This event is the baseline for the remainder of our summer curriculum covered in July and August on weekly national webinars aligned with all of our worksheet curriculum topics, as well as at local workshops and clinics where we bring together local experts to discuss their experiences and lead interactive sessions.Throughout the summer, companies will be using learning from the academy, webinars, workshops and clinics to complete a series of worksheets with their mentors (our submission for judging in the place of a business plan). Those worksheets are due in early September, and then we move into the presentation phase of the program. We will start with an interactive clinic on presentation and pitching called Tell Your Story Day – one held in Boston and one in New York City, where companies will have the opportunity to build and refine their elevator pitch, 3-minute demo pitch, 10-minute investor pitch, and also explore presenting their company in forums such as grant applications. Then, within a couple of weeks the companies will have the opportunity to pitch for the first time in front of our industry experts at a practice round called “Mock Judging” - this is the last opportunity to receive feedback and refine the pitch. Everything culminates at the Regional Finals Judging and Innovation Expo and Awards Gala in Boston. The Regional Finals is our big judging day for the competition, when companies pitch in front of our VIP judges, receive feedback, and are scored for the selection of the Regional winners. That evening companies will have the opportunity for 1:1 networking with the judges. The next day, the Innovation Expo and Awards Gala is our big celebration of entrepreneurship and the culmination of the program: the event will include speed networking with investors for our participating companies and alumni, showcasing, live pitches, and of course, the awards gala where we will announce the winners of this year’s regional competition, who will go on to the Global Forum in San Jose in November. The Global Forum is our culminating event of the year at the national level, where all of the participating companies nationwide have the opportunity to showcase and pitch and meet investors. The National Finalists (Regional Winners) also pitch and compete at this event for the chance to win the National Grand prize of up to $200K in cash and services!
In terms of the curriculum topics, these are the core topics that are covered during the summer training program on the national webinars. They are closely aligned with the company worksheets and judging criteria. Here in the Northeast we will be also offering in-person training events focused on three core topics that our participating entrepreneurs and mentors have emphasized are incredibly important to cover in-person in interactive sessions. We will be primarily focusing on customer development/go-to-market strategy, including market segmentation; financial modeling and alternative financing strategies, and building the team.
Which brings me to the prizes! Of course everyone gets so excited when we get to this point in the presentation – but I leave it until the end because I really believe based on our alumni companies’ experiences that our real value comes from the people and the programs, and that all participants in the cleantech open are winners because they were able to go through this process. Still, who doesn’t love a chance to win some prizes? That’s one of the reasons we use the platform of a business competition – it creates an incentive for all of the hard work that our companies go through. The prize structure is pretty simple – each region awards regional winners (national finalists) with prizes of up to $20,000 in the form of cash and in-kind services. In the northeast there were 4 finalists in 2012 – most regions award 3 prizes depending on their size. Those national finalists then compete at the Cleantech Open Global Forum in San Jose, CA for the National Grand Prize of up to $250,000 in cash and in-kind services.
