StumbleUpon

 1. 1. StumbleUpon Alec Reimel
 2. 2. What it does. On the surface, StumbleUpon may seem like a search engine, but it's actually quite different.
 3. 3.
 4. 4. History and Creator

The Creators, and current owners of StumbleUpon are Garrett Camp and Geoff Smith

While the creators of the site do own StumbleUpon, it was briefly owned by eBay from May 2007 to April 2009, when it was sold back to Garrett and Geoff.

 5. 5. Purpose The purpose of StumbleUpon is to help users discover and share sites that interest them.
 6. 6. What sort of content is on the site?

Everything. StumbleUpon has sites from almost every possible interest, ranging from science fiction to dating tips. The sites come from all over the internet, and from all over the world.

 7. 7. Uses

School- StumbleUpon can be used to research topics, as it is a powerful alternative to Google and Wikipedia.

Business- StumbleUpon allows business to advertise through their service.

Home- StumbleUpon allows users to learn about anything that interests them, and will often distract users from other things that they should be doing, due to how interesting the suggestions made by the site are.

 8. 8. Is it Web 2.0?

While StumbleUpon may not fit into a specific Web 2.0 category, it is, in fact, considered Web 2.0. This is because it's sort of a mashup between a search engine and a social network, two things that are standard Web 2.0 material.

 9. 9. Similar Sites

At this point, there aren't really any sites similar to StumbleUpon. The closest thing would be Google, but it still isn't very similar.

 10. 10. What does research say?

In general, reviews of StumbleUpon are overwhelmingly positive.

 11. 11. Positives and Negatives

Positives- StumbleUpon allows users to find sites that they wouldn't normally find, and that interest them.

Negatives- While the site is well made, it does occasionally go down for maintenance, and somewhat more often than your average Web 2.0 site.
