MOTIVATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS • Massive scalability: Scale to 100s of metro regions with 1000+ nodes each, recognizing that some nodes (e.g. access) have limited capabilities • End-point only service provisioning: Any to any, simple & rapid deployment, without per- service configuration in intermediate nodes, to allow for a stable transport network • Fast service restoration: Protection against link-/node- and/or endpoint failures using local or E2E repair techniques MOTIVATIONS AND DRIVERS KEY SOLUTION REQUIREMENTS • Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC): Move to a common multi-service network for all services • Evolution to LTE: flat, all-IP mobile network architecture • Cloud services: seamless access to the datacenter

ENABLING END-TO-END SCALABLE, SEAMLESS, RESILIENT NETWORKS SEAMLESS MPLS BENEFITS: • Massive scalability: Scale to 100s of metro regions with 1000+ nodes each, recognizing that some nodes (e.g. access) have limited capabilities • End-point only service provisioning: Any to any, simple & rapid deployment, without per-service configuration in intermediate nodes, to allow for a stable transport network • Fast service restoration: Protection against link-/node- and/or endpoint failures using local or E2E repair techniques • Seamless MPLS is an IETF Working Group initiative • It describes an architecture that can be used to extend MPLS networks to integrate access, aggregation and core networks into a single MPLS domain.

SEAMLESS MPLS HIGHLIGHTS • Seamless MPLS extends the core domain and integrates aggregation and access domains into a single MPLS domain, taking into account the limited feature-set and scale of Access PE’s and access nodes • Uses ‘divide-and-conquer’ approach – large problem is divided into many smaller problems • Gateway between core and aggregation and core network is implemented by an Area Border Router (ABR) • Architecture can be used for residential, MBH, or business services • Does not require any new protocols - just uses existing protocols such as BGP, LDP, and IS-IS Aggregation Network Aggregation Network Access Network Access Network Core Domain AGN ABRAN ABR AGN AN
