As humanity begins to understand the importance of diverse perspectives in accurate problem solving, many Montessorians have become seasoned professionals in conflict resolution. While mediative language has always been a part of the environment for children, we must acknowledge the complex nature of solving adult problems (allocation of resources, organizational structures, etc.). For this reason, it is possible that Montessorians may not only be ready to model a positive approach for children, but because we had to admit the underlying intentions of our fellow practitioners were aligned and leading to the same goal--despite the differences in emphasis or perspective, learning to collaborate (NOT compromise, necessarily) may have also prepared us to model a path through similar partisan dichotomies.
I can definitely say that I appreciate those who were ’keepers of the keys.’ They were absolutely correct that because Dr. Montessori’s scientific observations were based on biological realities, removing or compromising certain components, like removing vitamins from a diet, could result in unintended developmental ’deficiencies.’ Also, rather than provide the full spectrum of required experiences, adding unnecessary activities could be likened to adding ’junk food’ to a healthy diet (and still expecting optimal outcomes). They were right that “less is more.”
However, I appreciate those who argued against a rigidness that was also detrimental. There are SO MANY places for creativity and joy in the classroom. It is important to understand where constraints are unnecessary (and perhaps even detrimental) and where they are required. Cultural celebrations, artistic expression, the creation of regional textiles, etc., were all a part of the original spirit of discovery in Dr. Montessori’s model.
Learning to walk the ’fine line’ of balance with ever increasing accuracy, without compromising either essential substance or artistic sensibility, has been the center of Montessori life for the last 50 years. Many practitioners have been humbled in the process...and now hold a profound respect for the importance of diversity and open mindedness that is in harmony with principled integrity, and consistent with reality (rather than ideology).
Maria Montessori was a genius ahead of her time. It has taken the rest of us these many years to learn to practice and understand her brilliant contributions to the cognitive science of learning, and the quest for human dignity. 1 year ago
