  1. 1. WHAT’S ON July/August 2014 Teens & Tweens Follow Us Teen summer mega contest June 27 to Aug. 25 Back again this summer and better than ever! One lucky participant will win a brand new iPad mini! But that’s not all. For seven straight weeks we will randomly select one weekly winner of a $20 gift card! The stores and locations will change each week and include popular destinations such as Best Buy, Sport Chek, Tim Hortons and Chapters. “How do I win these great prizes?” you ask. Simple! Follow us on Twitter, Like us on Facebook or come see us in-person and receive ballots each time you do any of the following: 1. On Twitter, tell us what you’re reading using the hashtag #aplteens. Get a bonus ballot if you RT any of our #aplteens tweets! Follow us: @ajax_library. 2. On Facebook, tell us what you’re reading by commenting on our contest-related posts. Get bonus ballots if you Share and/or Like our posts! Like us: www.facebook.com/AjaxPublicLibrary 3. Visit any of the three branches and tell us in-person what you’re reading. There’s no limit to the number of times you can enter, and the more ballots you receive, the more chances you have to win! Open to youth age 12 to19 in Ajax. Weekly winners will be notified and may pick up their prize immediately. All participants will be entered into the draw for the Grand Prize iPad mini, but to claim the prize, the winner must be present at a special Award Ceremony on Monday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Main Branch with celebrity guest Fearless Fred Kennedy. (see sidebar for more info). If none of the participants are present at the ceremony, everyone will be put into a random draw for the Grand Prize and the winner will be contacted shortly after the ceremony. Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes of one of the most listened-to radio stations in the world? Do you read fantasy fiction and comic books, or are you a budding author yourself? As the host of Teletoon’s popular show Fred at Night, co-host of the afternoon drive on 102.1 The Edge and author of fiction and comic books, Fearless Fred has no shortage of things to talk about. Hear about what he’s working on now and get your questions answered. Also, get a pic and an autograph! Fred will also announce the winners of the Teens Write! Divergent Movie Party Wednesday, July 2  6 p.m. Main Branch Kick off summer with a free screening of the blockbuster movie Divergent before it’s available on DVD! Plus, take the aptitude test to find out what you’re made of and which faction you belong in. Win great Divergent prizes, including a copy of the book signed by Shailene Woodley, and enjoy a slice from Boston Pizza Ajax. In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she’s Divergent and won’t fit in. Wednesday, Aug. 13 7 – 8:30 p.m. Main Branch Join hip hop instructor Sam Udeschini, from local dance studio Dance Inc., to dance to today’s hit pop music and learn cool steps straight from the music videos. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just want to have fun, you’ll be taught the latest and most innovative urban dance techniques. Anyone can join this high-energy class as long as you bring some attitude and a little individual style. Sam has traveled to Denmark as a member of the Canadian National Hip Hop Team. performed at the Opening Ceremonies at the 2010 Ontario Summer Games and danced in Plaitwright’s “Dear Dancer” music video. Monday, Aug. 25 6 – 7 p.m. Main Branch Get ready to pick up some blocks and put your master building skills to the test in this head-to-head competition. Prizes and certificates will be awarded by our esteemed panel of teen judges. Make sure to stick around after the battle to meet Fearless Fred Kennedy, host of Teletoon’s popular show Fred at Night!   3. 3. teens write!teens write! Calling all writers in Grades 9-12: submit your original works for the chance to be published and win an iPad mini! New for 2014 We’ve included a Comic Book category! For comic book lovers, you can now write and illustrate a 1-2 page comic. Contest Rules All submissions must include the word ‘eureka’ but where you go from there is up to you and your imagination. For a complete list of contest rules, pick up the official flyer at any branch or visit our website. If You Win The winning submission in each category will be published in a book and added to the Library’s collection. Winners will receive their own personal copy. One of the three winners will be randomly selected to win a brand new iPad mini, but you must be present at the Award Ceremony to be eligible. If no winners are in attendance, all three will be put into a random draw for the Grand Prize and the winner will be contacted shortly after the ceremony. The other two winning entries will each be awarded one $75 gift card. Deadline All submissions must be received by Saturday, Aug. 9. Fiction, Poetry & Comic Book Contest with celebrity guest judge, Fearless Fred northern lights canada Monday, July 7 Tuesday, Aug. 5 4 – 6 p.m. Main Branch Meet with a representative from Northern Lights Canada, an organization that provides assistance with short and long-term employment and educational goals interactive job search workshop - Ages 14 to 24 Wednesday, July 16 Tuesday, Aug. 12 1 – 3 p.m. Main Branch Join representatives from Northern Lights Canada for a fun-filled afternoon developing job search strategies. Employment Help Wednesdays July 9 & 23, Aug. 6 & 20 12 – 2 p.m. Main Branch Youth and young adults between the ages of 13 to 29, who are not attending school, are invited to join staff from The Youth Centre for fun, informative sessions and a free lunch! Topics discussed will include employment, housing, healthy eating on a budget, family relationships and healthy sexuality. Drop-in program. Prove your allegiance in this DIY program by creating a 3D paper Pikachu, a pixelated Minecraft sword, a pool noodle lightsaber or by bringing an old t-shirt to trash and a face to zombify! Or go wild. Throw everything into a geek blender and give your Pikachu a mini Minecraft sword or turn yourself into a Zombie Jedi Master! Everyone will vote for which anime movie is played on the big screen while you work: Pokemon: The First Movie, Princess Mononoke or The Secret World of Arrietty. Free food will be provided and participants are encouraged to come dressed up as their favourite pop culture character. Ages 12 - 19.
