  • 3. What’s a colles fracture?<br />A colles fracture is a break across the end of the main bone in the forearm. It’s commonly called the dinner fork deformity because of it’s shape.<br />
  • 4. MOST COMMON CAUSE<br /><ul><li>FALLING AND LANDING ON HANDS CAUSING BODYWEIGHT TO OVERWHELM THE RADIUS</li></li></ul><li>IDENTIFYING THE FRACTURE<br />DEFORMITY IN THE SHAPE OF THE WRIST<br />PAIN AND SWELLING<br />BRUISING<br />
  • 5. SPLINT OR CAST<br />SURGERY<br />PLACING HARDWARE DEPENDING ON THE BREAK<br />SIX – TWELVE MONTHS<br />3 OUT OF 4 HAVE GOOD RESULTS FOLLOWING RECOVERY<br />TREATMENT AND RECOVERY<br />

  • 7. What’s a pathologic fracture?<br />Is a break in the area of the bone that is weakened by disease. Many diseases can cause the bone to weaken. <br />
  • 8. Osteopetrosis<br />Vitamin D deficiency<br />Melanoma<br />Mycobacterium tuberculosis<br />Unicameral bone cyst<br />Paget&apos;s disease of bone<br />And many others<br />Diseases like…….<br />
  • 9. The fist step in treatment is identifying the cause of the weakened bone.<br />Once identified<br />Then a doctor can proceed with either cast, splint or surgery to repair the break.<br />Treatment<br />
  • 10. COMMINUTED FRACTURE<br />
  • 11. What’s a comminuted fracture?<br />It’s when the bone is broken into more than three pieces. Splintered and/or crushed. <br />Is most common in elderly people.<br />Easy to diagnose with an x-ray.<br />
  • 12. FEEL THE PAIN….<br />
  • 13. RECOVERY<br />THE PROCESS OF RECOVERY FROM A COMMINUTED FRACTURE IS LONG AND REQUIRES MANY VISITS TO THE DOCTOR. <br />MAKING SURE THE PIECES ARE SET IN THE RIGHT POSITION IS CRITICAL IN THE HEALING PROCESS. <br />
