  • 3rd July 2010 camp.eden.sahanafoundation.org SahanaCamp Simulation Introduction (Team A) You and your team are disaster response volunteers with a Non Government Organisation. You live in Bihar and are responsible for responding to any floods in the area by assessing the needs of the affected population, registering shelters of displaced people and supplying aid where needed. Capacity Your organisation has the following resources: • Emergency Stock of Hygiene Kits • Access to use Army Helicopters for rescue operations (the director of your organisation used to play cricket with the local Army commander) Tasks 1. Register yourself at camp.eden.sahanafoundation.org. 2. Create a name for your organisation and register your organisation. 3. Add yourselves as staff to the organisation. Additional Information • Average household size in Bihar is 6 people • One Hygiene Kit is required per house hold • A shelter for 6 people can be constructed out of 10 6 foot bamboo poles and 4m x 20m tarpaulin. • One food kit can feed a family for 3 days

This has lead to severe flooding with threatens to affect millions of people living in the densely populated agricultural land in the north of Bihar. Your organisation has requested that you and your team conduct an assessment survey in the village of Khagaria (25.5N, 86.483E) in the district of Khagharia. During this assessment you must assign the tasks of: • Meet with Community Leaders • Conducting Water and Sanitation Survey • Conducting Household Survey • Investigating conditions in surrounding areas Tasks 1. Add a new project to represent this assessment. 2. Add your team members as staff on this project. Add your mobile contact number (please exclude the +91 country code and the leading ‘0’). 3.   • 3rd July 2010 camp.eden.sahanafoundation.org SahanaCamp Simulation SitRep II (Team A) You arrive in Khagaria and begin your assessment: • The village has a population of 2,400 people • About half of the local wells have been flooded and hygiene kits need to be distributed to these houses to prevent the spread of water borne diseases. • In the nearby village of Benibad, a shelter has set up by people fleeing neighbouring settlements to escape the flooding: o There are currently 60 families in the shelter o They have no food and will need to be supplied food for at least one week. o They will all need Hygiene Kits to prevent the spread of further disease. • The local community leader has passed on a report that a number of people are stranded 10km north of here. The flood waters are rapidly rising and they need to be evacuated now! Miraculously the leader of the stranded people, Sanjay Gupta is still in touch through mobile phone: +91-9198539599. Tasks 1. Use the information which you have collected at the village to add requests. Make sure to include the quantity and any additional requirements for the request. 2. Based on the requests and your organisation’s capacity, coordinate with other groups to ensure that pledges are made to meet all of the requests. You may need to work with other groups and make multiple pledges together to meet a single request. 3. Inform Sanjay Gupta once a pledge has been made to assist him.

Although more supplies of food are expected within days, the population is getting hungry. • In the nearby village of Rosera, a shelter has set up by people fleeing neighbouring settlements to escape the flooding: o There are currently 120 people in the shelter o They will all need Hygiene Kits to prevent the spread of further disease. o They currently have no shelter, so a temporary solution must be provided o This shelter is cut off by road, and the only way to reach it with supplies is by boat. Tasks 1. Use the information which you have collected at the village to add requests. Make sure to include the quantity and any additional requirements for the request. 2. Based on the requests and your organisation’s capacity, coordinate with other groups to ensure that pledges are made to meet all of the requests.
