Tips to help kids overcome fear of dentist

  1. 1. Sonoran Hills Dental When I was a kid, I remembered that I always cry everytime my mother sends me to my dentist. I was so scared that I can barely breathe. Even until now, I still feel scared everytime I feel pain from one of my tooth and realize that I have to pay my dentist a visit. The feeling of fear for the dentist is shared by almost every kid around the world. Parents like mine, always have a hard time to make their kids agree to go to the clinic. To help you, here are tips on how to help your kid overcome the fear of dentist. Fear of Dentist Tips to Help Kids Overcome Fear of Dentist Tips to Help Kids Overcome Fear of Dentist
  2. 2. Role play with your child before his first visit to the dentist. Play as the dentist. With the use of toothbrush, act out how the dentist will check your child’s teeth. You can also let your child play as the dentist and pretend to check and brush his stuffed animals’ teeth. Do not give too many details about what’s going to happen during his visit. When your child asks, just give a one-line answer. Let the dentist handle the technical questions, they’re the ones trained to handle kids. 3. 3. When answering, don’t use words associated to pain like hurt or injection. This will only make matters worse. Instead, assure your child that you will always be by his side until his appointment with the dentist is finished. Stay calm when he begins to fuss or cry. Tell him that it’s going to be alright and that he can hold your hand during the whole process. 4. 4. Don’t share your own dental experiences, especially if they were unpleasant. Don’t tell him your tooth was extracted or that you underwent root canal. Most of the children are afraid of the unknown or things that they don’t know. The words ‘root canal’ sounds scary in the ears of a child. 5. 5. Also, don’t bring them along when you yourself pay a visit to your dentist. You might not realize it, but your child can sense it when you’re anxious. He might also hear what you say to your dentist, like your tooth is painful. And your dentist saying, we have to take your tooth out. This kind of conversation will make the child fearsome of the dentist. 6. 6. Choose a dentist that is known to be friendly to kids. There are many dentists in Ahwatukee that you can choose from. You can also ask from friends, family and neighbors. They might have a good recommendation among the dental clinics listed in Ahwatukee. You have to let your child understand how important it is to visit the dentist. Tell him that the dentist is a good person that will make his teeth strong and healthy. This will make your child open up to his dentist because he now sees his dentist as a friend.
