Notas do Editor
Caatinga is the Brazilian semiarid Biome. It comprises a large geographic area (10 % of the country) including a variety of different types of vegetation, under extreme climatic conditions. Some disturbed areas undergoing desertification process.
It is considered a tropical seasonal dry forest. It host an impressive faunal and floristic biodiversity. There are two seasons: one hot and dry, and one hot and wet, shorter.
Most of plants boom during wet season. A survey of bee plants was done and a pollen library constructed for evaluate the use of floral resources by the bees in our study area.Their records and national distribution are available in the Virtual Herbarium of Brazilian Flora an Fungi , on line, with more than 4.million free access references.
The bees have massive feeding of the brood; they only construct brood cells when pollen is available I
Larval food is liquid and composed by a mixture of honey, pollen and glandular secretions. Workers fill the brood cells attended by the queen, that lay her egg on the larval food. Then, the cell is closed by workers and after 40 days in average a bee will emerge
The food (pollen and nectar/honey) is stored in special pots
This map shows where Melipona subnitida was collected during our field surveys, as well data from species Link database
