  • 6. Riding should be your first considerationChoose the riding environment that appeals to you; openmeadows, prairies, mountain trails or southwestern desert. Thelocation of the ranch determines the terrain.Then, choose the type of riding youd like. All ranches fall intoone of the following categories.•Working Dude Ranch: Your horseback riding adventures willbe determined by the ranchs livestock and the work related tothem.•Dude Ranch: Horseback riding is central to these ranches.•Resort Dude Ranch: Horseback riding is featured, and theseranches offer an array of diverse activities and onsite facilities.

  • 8. All-InclusiveThe "all inclusive rate" concept originated at DudeRanches. Rooms, meals and activities have beenincluded in the rate since the late 1800s. For the mostpart, you will find that your rate includes a full day ofactivities as well as your meals and lodging. Ranchvacations are a great value and make it easy to staywithin a budget. Because of the high ratio of staff toguests, a gratuity is usually added to the final bill anddistributed to all employees. Rate cards for all ranchesclearly state what is included and any additionalcharges that may apply.
  • 9. Horse Safety and First Aid for the TrailThe DRA’s Horse Safety and First Aid for the Trail is oneprogram provided to certified member ranches . Theprogram is a reflection of a proactive approach by the DRAto promote good SAFE horse programs that prepare staffto handle any emergencies that may occur on the trail andto be recognized as experts in the industry.This program is a reflection of the member ranches and ourresponsibility to give guest riders an enjoyable experiencealong with exercising the highest degree of care tosafeguard the lives and well-being of our riders. Eachcertified ranch must be recertified every three years. Theowner, operator or manager must attend both seminars tocomplete or update current certification.
