  10. 10. External FactorsDisasters can strike !Customers cancelledprojects and delayed payments.
  11. 11. Learning the hard way No B school or MBA I only have a Bachelor’s degree from NUS Non-tech trained Majored in Political Science & Economics No rich Dad Parents wanted me to work in banking No roots in Thailand Language and culture shocked (initially)
  12. 12. There’s never been a better time ! Strong talent pool Events galore Mentors to help Incubators too Funds starting to flow Sizeable market
  13. 13. The Fundamental Change The arrival of “apps” takes us beyond the phone and it became a hundred devices in one that serves differing functions for each user. With constant connectivity, it keep us plugged in to “the real world”.
  14. 14. More Device Choices…though the devices themselves will notradically change. Major innovations willmostly be about appearance, specs andscreen size rather than anything else
  15. 15. Growing Addressable Market Cheaper devices and lower data tariffs. Everyone has a smartphone Chinese smartphone markets will be DOUBLE that of USA in 2 years !
  16. 16. Easy Monetization Global markets now within reach 70:30 rev share led the market Everyone (almost) can sell apps or make money from in-app purchase
  17. 17. App Wars How many apps is too many apps ? Large developer communities means even more apps. The issue of discovery becomes an important consideration. Apps growing vertical – no longer “single” purpose
  18. 18. Watch out for these :“Locked” app storesGoogle Maps on iOSServices integrated into OSPassbookDefault apps get betterPanorama camera“Valley politics”Twitter blocks features for InstagramAPI “shut down”Google weather API shut down
  19. 19. You can forget most of what I said earlier. But please, remember these next 5 …
  20. 20. If you fail, you fail, but at least you tried.Failure can be your map to guide you to the next destination. The truth is that you’ll never be fully prepared to create a business — and no amount of classroom time will change that
  21. 21. Common Sense not just Technology Find that unsolved problem. Make sure it’s real and solve it. The messier the problem, the better it is.
  22. 22. Be Agile & AdaptScale quickly, get traction and stand out from the crowd. But be ready to adjust and find another way when challenged.
  23. 23. Do not follow where the path may lead.Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson
