  2. 2. Popular Composers Some popular composers include Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir Edward Elgar, Hubert Parry, Charles Villiers Stanford, Richard Strauss, and Arthur Somervell.
  3. 3. Sir Edward Elgar (1857- 1934) Born: 2nd June, 1857 Died: 23rd February, 1934 Best known for his orchestral works including Enigma Variations, and The Pomp and Circumstance Marches.
  4. 4. Richard Strauss (1864-1949) Born: 11th June, 1864 Died: 8th September,1949 Most known for his operas, especially Der Rosenkavalier, Salome, Lieder, and Four Last Songs.
  5. 5. Popular Music The popular music of the days include Love’s Old Sweet Song, Long, Long Ago, Cherry Ripe and many more.
  6. 6. Styles Compared to todays music, which is somewhat repetitive, Victorian Era music flowed from one genre to another over the course of the piece.
  7. 7. Music Halls Music Halls were a form of theatrical entertainment, but they also helped spread popular music around.
  8. 8. The Waltz Was a popular dance during the Victorian Era Considered “riotous and indecent” by the English Oxford Dictionary as a late as 1825.
  9. 9. The Polka The polka is a Central European dance. Originates from Czech word “pulka” (little half)- referencing to the quick half step of the dance, or Czech word “polka” (Polish woman/girl)
