Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is the laboratory measurement of amount of oxygen used in chemical reactions that occur in water as a result of the addition of wastes to it. It measures the sum total of organic and inorganic pollution in waste water. COD is a measure of the relative oxygen-depletion effect of a waste contaminant in water.
