te-form
Lesson Recap
A Sequence of Actions
Lesson 17
You can use a te-form if you want to combine two or more verbs, as in
describing sequence of events or actions (I do/did this and then I do/did that ).
In other words, the te-form does the work of and with verbs (since verbs
cannot be joined by と/to , which only connects nouns).
EX: あさ おきます/コーヒーを のみます
 →あさ おきて、コーヒーを のみます。
asa oki masu   koohii o nomi masu
asa okite、 koohii o nomi masu。
A sentence which is connected by te-form(s) is determined its tense by the last
verb. In other words, a te-form does not render any tense by itself.
EX: あさ おきました/コーヒーを のみました
 →あさ おきて、コーヒーを のみました。
asa oki mashita koohii o nomi mashita
asa okite、 koohii o nomi mashita
EX: あさ おきます/コーヒーを のみます
 →あさ おきて、コーヒーを のみます。
asa oki masu / koohii o nomi masu
asa okite、 koohii o nomi masu。
テレビを けします/がっこうに いきます
terebi o keshi masu / gakkou ni iki masu
ごはんを たべます/おてあらいに いきます
gohan o tabe masu / otearai ni iki masu
おふろに はいります*/ともだちに あいます
ofuro ni hairi masu / tomodach ni ai masu
にほんごの べんきょうを します/ねます
nihongo no benkyou o shi masu / ne masu
「∼て、∼ます/ました」の れんしゅう(1)
「∼te、∼masu/mashita」no renshuu(1)

We see a sentence in the drill 4 example dialogue where non-subject phrases
are made topics with the help of the particle は/wa .
Non-subject phrases with the topic maker particle は/wa
しゅうまつは なにを しましたか。
shuumatsu wa nani o shimashita ka。
In the above sentence, は/wa promotes a time expression as the topic of the
sentence. Its effect can be paraphrased like this : Let s talk about weekends;
what did you do on the weekends?
きょうは きょうとに いきます。
kyou wa kyouto ni ikimasu
In the above sentence, は/wa also promotes a time expression as the topic of
the sentence. Its effect can be paraphrased like this : Let me say what I will do
today; I will go to Kyoto today. The sentence doesn t mean as Today will go to
Kyoto. as the today makes an action to go to Kyoto.
