  5. 5. The International Academy of Osteopathy 13-08-20 5 Osteopathy Definition “Osteopathy is an established recognized system of healthcare which relies on manual contact for diagnosis and treatment. It respects the relationship of body, mind and spirit in health and disease; it lays emphasis on the structural and functional integrity of the body and the body's intrinsic tendency for self-healing. Osteopathic treatment is viewed as a facilitative influence to encourage this self regulatory process. Pain and disability experienced by patients are viewed as resulting from a reciprocal relationship between the musculoskeletal and visceral components of a disease or strain.” World Osteopathic Health Organization (WOHO)

  13. 13. The International Academy of Osteopathy 13-08-20 13 Osteopathy Indications  For the sake of clarity:  Osteopaths don’t cure diseases.  Osteopaths provide a better healing capacity for the complaint causing structures in the patients’ body, especially on a mechanical, neurological and vascular basis. Healing processes are thereby influenced positively. Also the general condition of the patient concerning posture, mobility, vascularisation and innervation will benefit from an osteopathic treatment. Osteopaths are no replacement for the General Practitioner of Medical Specialist. Osteopaths deliver an important contribution to the patients’ health condition concerning the qualities in which they are specialised:  Mobility of all possible joints.  Posture.  Vascularisation.  Innervation. This is done in an unique osteopathic concept that differs from other manual medical approaches.
  14. 14. The International Academy of Osteopathy 13-08-20 14 Mission Statement  Our goal is to form our students into safe, independent and complete osteopathic practitioners. Therefore we offer a modern course and curriculum with the highest possible academic standards. This high level of education will enable our graduates to provide all patients with the best quality osteopathic treatment available.  We promote academic standards in osteopathic training as well as recognition of academically trained osteopaths in all European countries in which we teach. Interdisciplinary cooperation with the medical professions is therefore of the outmost importance.  We maintain a solid relationship with our graduates and offer them a continuous postgraduate program in order to give them the opportunity to grow in the profession. Values Quality Innovation Appreciation Respect Code Respect for patients Respect for students Appreciation for teachers, assistants and other co-workers Reject unethical behaviour Follow laws and human rights
