MEANING AND DEFINITION
 Leadership is the quality of an individual , which enables him
in guiding & directing the community people to bring change
in the community.
 LEADERSHIP comes from the word LEADER .
 Leadership quality includes self-confidence, decision-making
power, a good ego & status in the community.
 A Leader guides & helps in identifying community problems,
in setting goals.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LEADERSHIP
 Three characteristics of leadership

LEADERSHIP ROLES OF COMMUNITY LEADER IN
COMMUNITY HEALTH PROGRAM
 First, we must identify the nature of leadership itself. This is different from
characteristics of leaders, including characteristics we desire them to have.
 There is probably only one characteristic that makes a person a leader. It is they
lead, and others follow. To avoid the implication that the followers are blind or like
sheep, and that a leader must go where she or he wants those followers to go, we
might reword that and say: "A person is a leader when she or he suggests or
proposes some action and others agree with it and are willing to do it."
 All other characteristics are characteristics of kinds of leaders, not leadership itself.
 When a mobiliser is organizing a community, she or he needs to identify
community leaders and potential leaders, because leadership is a vital element of
that organizing and organized action. Listen carefully. When some individuals
speak, no one pays attention. When others speak, people listen, and agree with
the ideas put forward. The mobiliser must find and shape local leaders and
potential leaders. If someone says things with which the mobiliser agrees, but no
one listens to, the mobiliser must be firm and go on to others. When a person
makes suggestions that other people take seriously, even if the ideas are not in
compliance with the principles the mobiliser wants to emphasize, the mobiliser
needs to select that person for training and shaping.
 A leader is one who leads.
 Once we understand leadership itself, it is now time to ask what characteristics can
leaders have that we desire, or see as being most useful.

Editor's Notes

  1. It is important element for group or teamwork. Leadership is the big source of knowledge, ideas & experiences.it bears a big responsibility for the betterment of the community.sometimes,a health educator can himself work as leader.but often times he should try to teach to people.people will hav gr8 faith upon their local leadership & listen to his advice & suggestion.
  2. 1) There is interaction betn leader & people .they should cooperate each other & develop faith.there is no leader without followers & there r no followers without leader. 2)force or threat canot develop successful leadership.leadership must be accepted bt the one who wants to take the leadership role.3)it according to situation at different times.
  3. They are responsible for their respective org.they are mostly involuntary & paid by concerned org.so formal leaders may not be from among local community.they will nt be familiar to local culture, traditions, beliefs and norms so people wil not have strong faith upon them as their true leader
  4. I leader are nt obliged to formal rules & regulations.
  5. Individuals opinion and suggestion are put minimum level of consideration. There is least contact or interrelationship betwn the leader and the members and even the members themselves In a smaller group leader will be directly incontact with each of the members.
  6. This is the flow of communication among the members . This kinds of leadership yields best result
  7. Helps the group in no way . Member speak or do anything way they like Cannot achieve anything for the benefit of the community , and the leadership has no meaning at all
  8. Role and responsilibilities of leader for community development
