• According to the most recent estimates from the Bureau of Labor
Statistics, total nonfarm employment in Detroit stood at ~2.0
million payrolls, representing an annualized increase of 46,400
jobs or 2.4 percent. Meanwhile, unemployment decreased 2.5
percentage points year-over-year to 5.7 percent.
• Nationally, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by
271,000 in October, and the unemployment rate was essentially
unchanged at 5.0 percent. Employment in professional and
business services rose by 78,000 in October, compared with an
average monthly gain of 52,000 over the prior 12 months.
• The largest year-over-year employment increase in the Detroit
metropolitan area in September 2015 was in the manufacturing
super sector, up 12,100 or 5.1 percent. Nationally, employment
in this industry sector rose 0.7 percent over the year.
