Blood Transfusions Are They Neccersery ? - Presentation Transcript

    1. Blood
    2. Blood - Is a Fluid, (red in colour) that is pumped by the heart. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and carries waste products away. Life is lifeless without it.
    3. The belief is based on the
      Witnesses’ interpretation of
      several verses in Genesis,
      Leviticus and Acts that forbid
      Christians from ingesting blood.
      • 80% of patients, Jehovah's Witnesses or not choose not to use Blood Transfusions.
      • Blood transfusions has caused 5,000,000 Hepatitis C in operations so far when used.
      • Blood use to cost €63/£55/$91 and it now costs €142/£124/$207.
      • There is a ½ chance of it killing you than saving you.
      • Approximately there is 10-50,000 people in the USA may be dying from Blood Transfusions.
      • Blood acquisition costs have more than doubled in the past few years and will continue to rise 5- 10% per year.
      • Surgeons give unnecessary treatment, there are medical risks,
shrinking blood inventories and the costs are soaring high.
    4. The surgeons often give patients the wrong type of blood. The reactions go from Mild to Fatal. All because of the human error, the doctors cause people to die. Giving the wrong type of blood has caused ½ of the Blood Transfusion patients to die.
    5. 1 -
      Open Heart Surgery
It was a major challenge but Dr Robinson (Paris, France) operated on a 10 month old girl without Blood Transfusions, no blood lost and it was a success!
    6. 2 -
      Liver Surgery
Normally it would need a blood transfusion but because the person was a Jehovah’s Witness they agreed not to use a pack of blood. The surgeon (New York City, United States) removed the cancerous liver and 18 hours later the patient was thanking and chatting to the surgeon.
    7. 3 -
      Orthopedic Surgery
The surgeon (Brussels, Belgium) performed knee surgery on a women. Again normally Blood Transfusions are needed but not in this case as she was a fellow surgeon and knew the dangers of the Transfusions. At the end her knee was as good as new.
    8. Those 3 Operations
      was without a
      Blood Transfusion and
      each very successful.
      • There are 100,000 surgeons who won’t give the transfusions because they are passionate about caring for the patients and also they know the risk. Did you know ¾ of their operations go victorious and according to plan.
    9. 1- Respect for Patients Decision.
      2- Evidence of Unnecessary Transfusions.
      3- Avoiding Medical Risks.
    10. 1- Respect for Patients Decision.
By law the doctors, nurses and surgeons have to happily obey the patients rights and decisions in every way.
    11. 2- Evidence of Unnecessary Transfusions.
      • In 1998 there was a study in Brussels, Belgium
where the health community looked at 43 hospitals in Europe and studied the operations given, they found that unnecessary transfusions were given when they wasn’t even needed to make operation successful. They also found without having the transfusion the mortality was the same and the stay in hospital was shorter. So in conclusion we find that unnecessary transfusions means unnecessary labour and unnecessary money loss.
    12. 3- Avoiding Medical Risks.
      • Risk of Bacteria infection that has fatal threats towards the patients life.
      Diseases caused by bacteria:
      Tuberculosis, TB (affects the lungs)
      Salmonella (causes food poisoning)
      Whooping cough (affects the lungs)
    13. 1- Tolerance of Anemia.
      2- Stimulating red blood cells.
      3- Minimizing blood loss.
    14. 1- Tolerance of Anemia.
      What is Anemia?
Anaemia means not having enough red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood.
      What is Haemoglobin?
Haemoglobin is a protein in the blood which contains iron and is used to transport oxygen around the body. Haemoglobin are found in the red blood cells.
Surgeons can use Anaemia instead of Blood Transfusions and they can last a good amount of time in the operation.
    15. 2- Stimulating red blood cells.
      • Erythropoietin (EPO)is a hormone, also the surgeons can use it as a gas. It makes more red blood cells grow. It is used to treat Anaemia. The hormone is also used for blood doping in endurance sports although this is illegal in all athletic competitions.
      • Using EPO can stimulate the blood calls making them grow back new and clean.
    16. 3- Minimizing blood loss.
      (very cost effective)
      • Tools can be used to help the loss of blood for example: a surgical stapler, can be used to seal blood vessels.
      • Moderate drugs can be applied to stop the bleeding, added straight to the part of the bleeding.
“We have found a way to stop
      bleedingthat could revolutionize
      bleeding control”- Dr Rutledge Ellis-Behnke.
Using ideas like these are a better, cleaner, moneyless way of saving blood. This way no Blood Transfusions are needed.
    17. One of the best alternatives to Blood Transfusions is the cell salvage machine. The machine is Commonly known as a "cell saver", the cell salvage
machine suctions, washes, and filters blood so it can be given back to the patient's body instead of being thrown away. One advantage to this is the patient receives his/her own blood instead of donor blood, so there is no risk of contracting outside diseases. Because the blood is circulated, there is no limit to the amount of blood that can be given back to the patient. This is what most Jehovah’s Witnesses use instead of transfusions.
    18. Well here’s an example.
Francesca, a 4 year old girl from Italy, born with a bad heart defect. She and her parents are Jehovah’s Witnesses and because of this they wanted their daughter cared with the cell salvage machine instead of the transfusions. Her 1st operation was a great success. They used cell salvage and the surgeons were really happy with the outcome of the operation.
    19. Surgeons also carried out another investigation. They looked at 50 people who were Jehovah’s Witnesses and a 100 people from the public (USA) and they found that the Jehovah’s Witnesses (that declined the Transfusions) had a shorter stay in hospital and were a lot cheaper to care for. The public would also have a 50-50 chance of dying from the bacteria in the transfusion packs.
    20. 2.) There has been cases when they have given Blood Transfusions without permission and that is against the law and disrespecting the patient. There has been cases in which they have given Jehovah’s Witnesses Transfusions without permission, in which they have sued and they had every right.
1.) When people are rushed to hospital and are in need of blood so desperately the professional surgeons have absolutely no right to give an unauthorised blood transfusion without the patients agreement.
But how would they know what they wanted if they’re unconscious?
3.) If they are unconscious they have a right to ask a family member or check their wallet/purse or car keys for the “No Blood” sign.
    21. What are the signs ?
    22. Part 1
      • Surgeons have to respect the clients choice 100%
      • Patients should be told that there are alternatives before a Blood Transfusion is given.
      “Free and Informal Consent”
    23. Part 2
      European Convention:
      Human Rights and Biomedicine
_”An intervention...may only be carried out after the person concerned has given free and informed consent to it.” – Article 5
_”The opinion of the minor shall be taken into consideration as an increasingly determining factor in proportion to his or her age and degree of maturity.” – Article 6
    24. DR. Vipul Patel – consultant orthopaedic surgeon gave an old woman (a Jehovah's Witness) a hip replacement and it was successful, no Transfusion needed. He was happy too.
She quotes, _”Well I do believe god is against taking blood, and we should appreciate that gods word is the truth.”
For the suggestion of the cell selvage machine she quoted, _”When he told me about the machine and described it in detail to me I was really happy.”

    25. God's view on the sacredness of life and morality and blood don’t change.
Acts 15:28,29:28 - For the holy spirit and we ourselves have favoured adding no further burden to YOU, except these necessary things, 29 - to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. If YOU carefully keep yourselves from these things, YOU will prosper. Good health to YOU!”
Acts 21:25:25- As for the believers from among the nations, we have sent out, rendering our decision that they should keep themselves from what is sacrificed to idols as well as from blood and what is strangled and from fornication.”God has not changed his views as right from the beginning in Genesis He told us his views of blood:
    26. In Conclusion we can see that Jehovah God views blood as valuable as life itself! It should not be shared upon with anyone else through BLOOD TRANFUSIONS.
      Religious Or Not?
Blood Transfusions can kill more than they can save. There is a ½ chance you will die from them anyway. Why would you use blood of another when you can have quick, simple, cheap and clean surgery by using the right tools, drugs and the cell salvage machine. You can find the NO BLOOD form online!
