  • AT THE OFFICES OF BARRY SWENSON BUILDER, ARCHITECTURAL UNIT.
  • THIS IS AN ALTERNATIVE STUDY TO BUILD A HOTEL ON A 2.7 ACRE SITE SURROUNDED BY SUBURBAN CENTERS AND RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS.
  • THIS IS AN ALTERNATIVE STUDY TO BUILD A HOTEL ON A 2.7 ACRE SITE SURROUNDED BY SUBURBAN CENTERS AND RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS.
  • THIS IS AN ALTERNATIVE STUDY TO BUILD A HOTEL ON A 2.7 ACRE SITE SURROUNDED BY SUBURBAN CENTERS AND RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOODS.
  • A TWO PRODUCT, SINGLE OPERATOR CONCEPT. NOT A FULL SERVICE HOTEL.
  • THE PAINTINGS ARE THE AUTHOR’S OWN WORKS OF ART.
  • THE AUTHOR’S OWN WORK OF ART.
  • Located in Abha, one of the colder climates and rougher terrain regions of Saudi Arabia.
  • Multifarious “Schools” that constitute the University are brought into co-existence on one site, despite highly stratified and specific needs. The heart of the plan is the library and administration buildings. The library was designed by the author.
  • The Central Campus Library is planned to serve Male and Female students separately, following dictates of segregation written into the design program. The library was designed by the author. Clad in local stone and some glass block that lights up the storage stacks at night, this building is designed on passive green principles, keeping the interior cool and borrowing northern light in this hot arid climate that reverses itself in winters. The sketches that follow provide insight into the design process.
  • THE AUTHOR TAKES CREDIT FOR THE ENTIRE SITE ANALYSIS, CIRCULATION AND NETWORK PLANNING, AS WELL AS THE AXIAL DESIGN CONCEPT THAT PLACES THE NATURAL TERRAIN OF THE CENTRAL HILLOCK AT THE HEART OF THE CAMPUS AND MAKES IT THE STUDENT BAZAAR AND SOCIAL CENTER. PRESENTATION MATERIALS WERE PREPARED BY JUNIOR ARCHITECTS AT OMRANIA’S JORDAN OFFICE.
  • Once again, the library forms the heart of the Institution, as at Louis Kahn’s IIM buildings at Ahmedabad. Lessons that this author learned directly from the buildings of the great master while studying under his former students in India. The medical sciences building is located at the other end of the axis that cuts across the hillock in the middle, marking the social center or genius loci in this instance. By retaining the hillock and integrating it with the built environment (shops carved out from it and tents added to provide shade), this hillock provides an anchor and landmark in the space that gathers people around and within it. From here it is easy to orient oneself after arrival at the drop off apron on the east. A housing colony sits at the north separated by the road and landscape from the main campus.
  • Approximately 3 square kilometers ( > 1 sq. mile) of land was charted out for a women’s campus annex to the existing King Saud University in Riyadh, a 1960’s plan by Caudill Rowlett Scott with additions by HOK. This site is in the northern region of Riyadh, away from the other campus and generally accessible by motor vehicles. Riyadh can be very windy during summers and winters when sandstorms are not uncommon. Climate, solar and spatial orientation are critical to the success of large institutions on its fringes.
  • MALE AND FEMALE SEGREGATION PLAYS A STRONG ROLE IN THE DESERT ISLAMIC REGION AND CULTURE OF SAUDI ARABIA. CIVIC AND INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS IN URBAN AREAS TOO FOLLOW THIS FUNCTIONAL DICTUM. A LAND THAT STRUGGLES TO KEEP ITS TRADITIONS WOVEN WHILE ATTEMPTING ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGICAL AND INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS, SAUDI ARABIA SITS AT THE FOREFRONT OF ADVANCED LEARNING SYSTEMS IN THE MIDDLE EAST. TO GARNER IT’ S BEST EDUCTATIONAL RESOURCES FOR ITS POULACE, THESE INSTITUTIONS ARE PROGRAMMED TO HAVE THE FOREMOST AND MOST ADVANCED OF LEARNING AMENITIES AND TECHNOLOGIES BUT REMAINS STAUNCH IN ITS PRESERVATION OF TRADITION, ESPECIALLY ONE RELATING TO RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE.
  • It is always difficult to cover the wide plethora of concerns addressed during the process of deigning for communities and their needs. Various interest groups whose needs and aspirations are not always conciliatory participate in the shaping of concerns that eventually have to be rationalized and expressed through the medium of building. Architectural design in this instance becomes a much more public process than it may want to be.

  • The competition winning design involves a 30,000 sf addition to the existing building (on the right above). The main components of the addition are a 500 seat theater and administrative offices. The basement parking is also extended. The accessible route ramp is integrated into the architectural design and forms a critical element of the entry expression. Bureaucratic changes in the sluggish Saudi system have prevented decision making on getting this project built.
  • The competition winning design involves a 30,000 sf addition to the existing building (on the right above). The main components of the addition are a 500 seat theater and administrative offices. The basement parking is also extended. An outdoor plaza is framed by a portal that ties it to the building while urbanizing the facade on the side street.
  • The auditorium is designed to facilitate daylight from above at the periphery of the “drum” it occupies. Though it encompasses one of the most difficult shapes to treat acoustically, a prototype built prior to this yielded excellent acoustic results.
  • BUILT IN 2004 IN 6 MONTHS. CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS ALSO LED BY AUTHOR, COMPLETED IN 4 WEEKS.
  • CONCEPT AND PRELIMINARY DESIGNS BY AUTHOR WHILE WORKING AS PROJECT DESIGNER
  • THE “PEARLS ON A STRING CONCEPT TO BORROW MORE DAYLIGHT WAS TURNED DOWN BY THE CLIENT FOR REASONS OF HVAC COST AND EXTRA EXTERIOR WALL. IRONICALLY, THIS WOULD BE A WELCOME NOTION UNDER THE GREEN PRINCIPLES OF TODAY. The design was revised to suit the concept of a closed box or shed under which all multifarious functionbs would occur – typically a government building with low budget investment. The resulting building puts many habitable spaces at the middle of the “box” under artificial light and air, besides acceptable storage and ancillary functions
  • THE ABOVE SKETCH WAS MADE BY THE AUTHOR AT THE CONFERENCE TABLE IN A MEETING WITHIN 3 MINUTES TO EXPLAIN HOW THE LIBRARY PRESENTED ITSELF. THIS 3 MINUTE SKETCH (PENCIL ON PAPER – SOLARIZED) ANSWERED MANY QUESTIONS FOR THOSE WHO QUERIED. THIS SKETCH TECHNIQUE COMES DOWN FROM THE AUTHOR’S TEACHERS WHO LEARNED THIS TECHNIQUE FROM LE CORBUSIER IN THEIR DAYS TOGETHER AT CHANDIGARH.
  • AS A RESULT OF THE DEATH OF THE PROPRIETOR OF THE DESIGN FIRM AND THE FIRM’S EVENTUAL CLOSURE, THIS PROJECT WAS NOT BUILT
  • BANK AT LOWER LEVEL, SPEC. OFFICES AT UPPER LEVEL – 18000 SF TOTAL
  • BANK AT LOWER LEVEL, SPEC. OFFICES AT UPPER LEVEL – 18000 SF TOTAL
  • RUNNER UP – DISPUTED WINNER. This Building is exemplary in environmentally sensitive design – Green and Sustainable design approach is eveident in the slatted pergolas on the front end and the screens over the windows. The interiorized atrium and its subsidiary courts with controlled clearstory lighting is also part of this response to climate and energy.
  • RETAIL AT GROUND LEVEL, OFFICE SPACE AT UPPER LEVEL. THE TOWER “SCOOPS” ARE REMINISCENT OF THE HISTORIC AIR SCOOPS OF TRADITIONAL BUILDINGS ALONG QATAR’S COAST. THE BUILDING DRAWS ITS ICONOGRAPHIC MEMORY FROM THESE ELEMENTS WHICH ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE STIRWELL DESIGNS.
  • AL-JERAISY IS A BIG BUSINESS NAME IN RIYADH, THEIR PRIME BUSINESS BEING COMPUTER SALES. THE AUTHOR HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING A KEY MEMBER OF A DESIGN TEAM THAT MET WITH THE DIRECTORS OF THE COMPANY TO DISCUSS PROGRAM AND BUDGETS, WHILE ALSO MEETING WITH THE FRENCH SUPERMARKET GIANT CARREFORUS CORPORATE LEADERS TO BRING TO FRUITION THIS GIGANTIC MALL VENTURE THAT INCLUDES A HYPERMARKET, SEVERAL ANCHOR STORES AND A 2800 CAR PARKING GARAGE, DAYLIT TO DAMPEN CONCERNS OF CLAUSTRPHOBIA COMMON AMONG THE SAUDI POPULACE.
  • COMMISSIONED BY THE KING OF MOROCCO, AND DESIGNED TO SUIT A MULTITUDE OF CODES-FRENCH, BRITISH AND AMERICAN.
  • SAUDI SOCIETY LOVES TO NETERTAIN AND BE ENTERTAINED; HOEVER, LADIES AND CHILDREN ARE GUARDED CLOSELY – FAMILIES REMAIN THE CENTER OF ATTENTION. INTERMIXING IS DISCOURAGED EXCEPT BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE SAME GENDER. THIS WAS SOUGHT BY THE CLIENT TO BE A PRIME DESIGN CONSIDERATION SO THAT PRIVACY WAS MAINTAINED TO A FAIR DEGREE EVEN IN THE PUBLIC SPACE OF A CINEMA HALL. THE DESIGN USES BAFFLES TO SECURE PRIVACY WHILE ANGLING THEM HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY TO PERMIT SIGHT LINES TO THE SCREEN. SECTIONS THAT FOLLOW ALSO REFLECT THIS.
  • THIS PROJECT WAS ON THE SAUDI BORDER TOWN OF KHAFJI, BY THE ARABIAN SEA ALONG THE BORDER WITH KUWAIT. BOTH GOVERNMENTS HAD JOINT INTEREST IN THIS PROJECT AS A CENTER FOR OIL TESTING AND RESEARCH.
  • AUTHOR WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEMATIC DESIGN AND PLANNING.
  • AUTHOR WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHEMATIC DESIGN AND PLANNING.
  • THE PRAYER HALL, CENTRAL TO SAUDI SOCIETY EVEN OCCUPIES A CENTRAL ROLE IN THE WORKPLACE, SINCE THE ISLAMIC FAITH PREACHES THAT ALL HUMAN ACTIVITY MUST EVOLVE AROUND ONE’S DUTIES TO GOD AND IN SERVICE TO HIM. THUS THE KNOWLEDGE THAT IS DRAWN FROM THE FOUNT OF THE ABSOLUTE OCCUPIES A CENTRAL POSITION SYMBOLICALLY WHILE THE RESEARCH LABS SURROUND IT AS IF METAPHORICALLY DRAWING THEIR KNOWLEDGE FROM A CENTRAL RESOURCE.
  • AUTHOR WAS A KEY MEMBER OF THE DESIGN TEAM
  • AUTHOR WAS A KEY MEMBER OF THE DESIGN TEAM
  • AXONOMETRIC VIEW REQUIRED BY THE COMPETITION SPONSORS
  • 50,000 SF RECREATION FACILITY WITH CARD ROOMS, INDOOR GAMES, SQUASH COURTS, BILLIARDS, BANQUET ROOMS AND POOL WITH OUTDOOR ACTIVITY ELEMENTS SUCH AS AMPHITHEATER, SPORTS FIELDS AND PONY AND WATER COURSES ON CAMPUS LIKE SETTING OUTSIDE SUBURBAN AREA ON URBAN FRINGE, DESIGNED FOR ELITE CLUB MEMBERS. THE DESIGN DRAWS ITS INFERENCES FROM REGIONAL ARCHITECTURAL AND LANDSCAPE TYPOLOGIE, PARTICULARLY THOSE BELONGING TO THE MUGHAL ERA AT FATEHPUR SIKRI AND THE CHHAR BAAGH CONCEPT. AXIAL CONNECTIONS AND LINKAGES STAGGER TO PROVIDE A SUBTLE DYNAMIC TO THE VISTAS, SIMILAR TO THE MOVEMENTS IN PROPORTION AND FORM AT SIKRI.
  • INDOOR SOCCER (FUTBAL) IS KNOWN AS FUTSAL, QUITE A POPULAR SPORT IN SAUDI ARABIA. THIS PROTOTYPE HALL CONSIOSTING OF FOUR COURTS AND AN OBSERVATION GALLERY SPINE INCLUSIVE OF SUPPORT FUNCTIONS IS MEANT TO BE A “PIONEER” OR VANGUARD IN THE KINGDOM FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS OF SOCCER FANS. AUTHOR WAS THE CHIEF DESIGNER OF THIS PROJECT.

AUTHOR WAS THE CHIEF DESIGNER OF THIS PROJECT.
  • THIS WAS A REAL PROJECT BEING PARTLY SUBSIDIZED AND SPONSORED BY THE AHMEDABAD MUNICIPAL CORPORATION IN 1981. IT WAS IMPLEMENTED BY ANOTHER ARCHITECT IN 1998, ALMOST SEVENTEEN YEARS LATER AFTER BUDGET CUTS THAT LEFT ENOUGH MONEY ONLY TO BUILD THE SHOPS TO REHABILITATE THE ILLEGAL VEGETABLE HAWKERS IN PERMANENT SHOPS AT THE PODIUM-STREET LEVEL.
  • THE PROJECT SEEKS TO UNEARTH THE OLD BURIED CITY WALL AND USE IT AS AN”EDGE” (IN KEVIN LYNCH’S TERMS) TO SERVE ICONOGRAPHICALLY AS A REMINDER OF THE CITY’S PAST AND PRAGMATICALLY AS A PHYSICAL BARRIER TO SEVER THE CROSS LINK BETWEEN THE REHABILITATED SHOPOWNERS IN THE MARKETPLACE AND THE HISTORIC INNER CITY CORE THEREBY CURBING ILLEGAL EXPANSION AND RENOVATION. IT ALSO TO PROPOSES RESOLVE URBAN SOCIAL PROBLEMS WITH THE PROVISIONS OF GARBAGE DUMPS AND PUBLIC TOILETS IN ANATTEMPT TO BE SOCIALLY RELEVANT RATHER THAN ARCHITECTURALLY SAVVY. THE CIRCULATION ALONG THE STREET IS MIRRRORED IN THE BRIDGES THAT CONNECT THE UPPER LEVELS AND FEED THE OFFICE BLOCKS THAT ARE TURNED PERPENDICULAR TO THE STREET TO REDUCE THE IMPACTS OF DIRECT NOISE.
  • NOTE THE DELIBERATELY ANGULAR DISPOSITION OF THE SHOPS THAT DRAWS FROM THE CHARACTER OF STREETS IN OLD TOWNS OF THE ANCIENT ISLAMIC WORLD.
  • THE PICTURE WINDOWS THAT LOOK DOWN FROM THE LIBRARY TO THE INTERIOR “STREET” ARE REMINISCENT OF THE OLD TOWNS OF THE ANCIENT ISLAMIC WORLD FROM WHERE MANY OF OAKLAND’S IMMIGRANT MUSLIMS HAIL FROM.
