    Fablab Formation in Ethiopia - Presentation Transcript

    1. Fablab in Ethiopia
      • Set up of a fabrication laboratory in Addis Ababa possibly in Addis Ababa University – School of Fine Arts
      • Collaboration of Fablab Barcelona, MIT( Massachusetts institute of Technology), AECID (Agency of International Development Cooperation)
      • It will be a research center where students, clients and other interested people will be using.
      • It is also a center which is connected to all Fablab academies in the world (USA, Barcelona, India, Netherlands, SouthAfrica …)
    2. What is FabLab?
      • Is a community system which enables any one to produce (almost) any thing.
      • Is involved in education, community and business.
      • It is the Personal Fabrication using Digital Tools.
    3. Fablab-Addis
      • Status
      • Machines are being researched and we are contacting the suppliers. (quotations have been received and awaiting for decisions)
      • Three students from Ethiopia are currently taking the courses on design, utilization, management and maintenance of the Fabrication laboratory.
      • These students along with the fablab Barcelona are processing the methods of implementing the fablab Addis in Ethiopia.

      • Assistant Lecturer at School of fine Arts and Design (Addis Ababa University)
      • Now learning in Fab Academy, Barcelona
      • Current Courses in the semester are CAD, CAM manufacturing courses, programming courses, research on technical facilities in Ethiopia and also taking lectures on many courses in various projects involved in application of these digital machines
      • Thesis for the semester is on LED Accessories (electronic aided design of accessories)

      • Aysheshim Tilahun
      • Mechanical Engineer - Working in his small company, Dobby wood and Metal works Plc
      • Now learning in Fablab Barcelona
      • Current projects in the semester are CAD, CAM manufacturing courses, programming courses, research on technical facilities in Ethiopia and also taking lectures on many courses in various projects involved in application of these digital machines
      • Thesis for the semester is on a Digital Transporter which moves tiny components which is applied in Electromechanics

      • Melat Assefa
      • Assistant Lecturer (Addis Ababa University-Department of Architecture)
      • Now learning in FabLab Barcelona
      • Current projects in the semester are CAD, CAM manufacturing courses, programming courses, research on technical facilities in Ethiopia and also taking lectures on many courses in various projects involved in application of these digital machines
      • Thesis for the semester is on digitally fabricated sculptures to be used for public spaces

    9. * It is a machine used to cut with laser rays. It is the most expensive machine in the Fab Lab's. The picture besides the machine is control panel and a model exercise made by it.
