increase their physical activity levels – usability testing
and randomised controlled trial protocol

usability testing & lessons learnt
randomised controlled trial protocol
22. usability testing
6 captain women recruited for usability testing. These women
have formed teams to pilot the app.
23. usability testing & lessons learnt
Facebook apps behave differently on
different browsers & devices
invitation and team forming process
is complex and involves a number of
steps
security settings on computers have
impacted on some functions
24. mums step it up program
usability testing & lessons learnt
randomised controlled trial protocol
25. randomised controlled trial
primary aim
to determine the effectiveness of the program in:
• increasing objective physical activity
• influencing secondary outcomes
26. randomised controlled trial
additional aims
• to determine the role of TPB constructs in mediating
behaviour change
• to determine the feasibility and engagement of the Mums
Step it Up Program through a process evaluation
27. baseline assessments
block randomisation of
teams
intervention: Mums
Step it Up Program
control group:
written information
intervention:
pedometer with log
book
6 week assessment
6 month assessment
,
Recruitment via mums &
babes groups
28. randomised controlled trial
outcome
measures
sleep
quality and
quantity
objective
physical
activity
mood
quality of
life
weight
mediators
feasibility &
engagement
29. future potential
dissemination on a mass scale
adapting the app for other populations:
teenage girls - a group who are large
Facebook users
people who are socially isolated e.g. rural
and remote areas; chronic conditions
30. mums step it up tip
Boarded tram at 3:00pm. Forgot about school kids. Got off tram a stop
early to avoid listening to scads of school kids singing along to Lady
Gaga. I got to walk for a bit and plus, no one can do Gaga justice
except me.
31. acknowledgements
Portal Australia who have been
employed to assist with the
development of the app.
University of South Australia
Divisional Grant for funding the
app development.
32. randomised controlled trial
data analysis
intention to treat principle will be applied
random effects mixed modelling - to determine the effectiveness of the
program
process evaluation data will be descriptively analysed and subgroup
analysis undertaken.
Editor's Notes
Oral presentation = 20 mins
Thank you for coming along to the presentation of my research proposal.
The title of my research project is: The Mums Step it Up Program- a social networking physical activity intervention for post-partum women
Before I move on I would like to acknowledge the excellent support and assistance that I have received from my supervisors Dr Carol Maher, Professor Tim Olds and Dr Lucy Lewis
Woman is under women’s faces category on clip art
Baby photo is baby face 3
Program works towards cumulative goal of 10,000 steps per day
Program is delivered via a Facebook app – briefly out line how it will be used during the recruitment and intervention phase
? Theory
Usability session included a feedback questionnaire and a checklist of tasks undertaken.
During usability we also piloted the assessment battery that will be used during the RCT this involved wearing an accelerometer for 7days which gave us a measure of objective physical activity.
Subjective physical activity was also measured using the Australian Physical Activity Survey.

This is the dashboard
Highlight each feature individually if can and then explain
Use slide to highlight each component. Talk in more detail about the aim and eligibility criteria which are on separate slides and then briefly discuss the other main headings-
e.g. For search strategy give broad outline of the type of data bases medline and allied health, theses
Study selection, data extraction and assessment of bias will be carried out by two people. Briefly outline tools used
Data analysis- Descriptive and metanalysis
Will inform rest of research program by giving us a detailed picture of these behaviours change during this transitional period in women lives.
The rest of the PhD program will focus specifically on the post-partum period
Concerns are often raised about the negative impact of computer based technology on health and wellbeing- However we can turn this around and think about researchers and clinicians can start how technology can be used improve health outcomes
I have shown you these two quotes as it is these thoughts which have attracted me to doing this research study and the thought of additional application of a Facebook app to other population and health related issues
