3. 3. Opening sequence

Fairly typical, although Music is slightly less serious and self-important sounding than on other channels.

Headlines suggest a range of stories but a definite human interest focus. Unusually, a soldier at the centre of a story is permitted to directly address the camera – an unusual technique – only the anchor can do this usually.

 4. 4. Studio

Bright, high-key lighting. Blue colour scheme to backdrop.

Red sofa for anchor who also has a laptop.

Modern glass desk – anchor is not sat behind it – relatively informal.

Bright, white 7 for 7 o’clock news.

 5. 5. Presenter

Experienced TV journalist Matt Barbet. Youthful – especially when compared with some anchors on other channels.

Smartly dressed but not wearing a tie signifying less formality than on other channels news broadcasts.

Friendly – “sorry for the jokes” etc.

 6. 6. 7. 7. Running Order 2

Soldier shot in the helmet in Afghanistan.

Columbine massacre anniversary.

Jamaican Hijacking.

Crimestoppers.

Celebrities back anti-malaria campaign.

Susan Boyle could break youtube record.

7 Year old agony aunt.

American geese plays chicken.

Star Trek film has world premiere.

 8. 8. Agenda

A broad range of stories are covered from Home news, World news, economic news. There is a clear focus on human interest stories and a balance between hard and soft news.

Stories are covered with brevity and clarity – 17 stories in well under half an hour.

 9. 9. Lead Story

Inquest into deaths at NHS hospital. Presentation techniques follow generic conventions – underlay, pre-prepared VT Package, use of graphics, top and tail, interviews with family members, statement from Doctor etc.

Coverage is relatively brief when compared with lead stories from other news broadcasts.

 10. 10. Techniques used

Use of music and supposedly illustrative montage during sequence on economic recovery.

Similar technique used for children in care story.

Music used to accompany cctv footage of Tesco bullet sender.

Sequence of journalist to show why she isn’t taken seriously at work.

 11. 11. Mode of Address

Friendly and inclusive.

Accessible vocabulary.

Extensive use of graphics and/or montages to illustrate stories covered.

Overall style is similar to a daily magazine programme – less formality than on other main channels news. No tie, balance of light hearted and serious stories – hard and soft news.

 12. 12. Conclusion

Five’s news is on at the sane time as Channel 4 news and is clearly differentiating itself from C4 news. C4 News is very detailed and utilises a more formal mode of address than Channel 5 which is informal and covers a wide range of stories quickly but without detailed analysis or explanation.

Note also that Five News is provided by Sky News.

 13. 13.

Discuss the ways in which Five’s Evening News tries to attract its target audience.
