  3. 3. <ul><li>Intent </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I really want to understand what you are saying </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I am really going to listen to you </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I will work to understand your process </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Empathy </li></ul><ul><ul><li>I empathize with the challenges you face </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>I understand the reason behind your current process </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Recognize given the same set of circumstances you might have been at the same place or worse </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. <ul><li>Listening with intent is harder than you think </li></ul><ul><li>Having the person BELIVE you are listening is even harder! </li></ul><ul><li>Faking Intent and Empathy is not a long term solution </li></ul><ul><ul><li>They will figure it out </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>You will probably need counseling if they don’t. </li></ul></ul>

  6. 6. <ul><li>The Platinum Rule: Do unto other as they want you to do unto them, up to a certain point!!!!! </li></ul><ul><li>Using the right format </li></ul><ul><ul><li>email, voice, or actual human interaction </li></ul></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Whatever format you use communicate with professionalism </li></ul><ul><li>Match to their preferred communication method whenever possible…. if it works </li></ul><ul><li>What team members prefer may not be the best method to communicate </li></ul>
  8. 8. <ul><li>Have a Agenda </li></ul><ul><li>Have a realistic agenda </li></ul><ul><li>Follow the time </li></ul><ul><li>Everyone knows all this but few do it consistently! </li></ul><ul><li>Self assessment after each meeting </li></ul><ul><li>Maybe it’s not your team maybe it is YOU!!!! </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>Learn to present effectively to a larger audience </li></ul><ul><li>Think you’re already good? Record yourself for ten minutes giving a presentation and watch it! </li></ul><ul><li>If you can find nothing wrong with it chances are you are in need more help than the person who sees problems </li></ul>

  14. 14. <ul><li>Not just a contact list </li></ul><ul><li>How will we communicate </li></ul><ul><li>How will we escalate </li></ul><ul><li>Stakeholder buy in </li></ul><ul><li>Make it appropriate. </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Do you really need all twenty people at every meeting? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Does it really have to go out weekly? </li></ul></ul>
