Continuing Professional Development Requirements for Specialists in BC The Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC requires that all specialists practising in BC must enrol in the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). The RCPSC has agreed to document the CPD activities for nonmembers, subject to the payment of an administrative/registration fee of $390. Actual membership in RCPSC will not be required. The fee provides access to MAINPORT and the Educational Support Centre, a yearly credit summary and a listing in the CPD Program Directory. 4

  • 7. The CPD Program supports three types of continuing professional development activities: Group learning Self-learning Practice assessment These eligible learning activities are based on the CanMEDS definition of the seven core competencies needed for medical education and practice. 7

  • 9. Participation in the CPD Program The program is based on a five-year cycle, with the first cycle beginning on January 1 of the year following your registration. The time between initial registration in the program and starting the first cycle is considered a bonus period. CPD Program participants are not required to partake in the program during this bonus period; however, learning activities completed during the bonus period will count toward the requirements of the first CPD Program cycle. 9

Participation in the CPD Program Program requirements Participants are required to complete a minimum of: 40 credits in each year of a cycle by participating in continuing professional development activities and reporting the outcomes of those activities, as outlined in the Framework of Continuing Professional Development Activities, and 400 credits during the span of a cycle. 10

Participation in the CPD Program Reporting activities MAINPORT (www.mainport.org) is an easy-to-use online tool that offers participants the ability to track learning activities in a simple and convenient way. Participants simply enter their completed continuing professional development activities in MAINPORT and the time spent participating in activities is converted into credits. 11

  • 13. Participation in the CPD Program Reporting activities Participants are responsible for ensuring that all continuing professional development activities for the year are reported by January 31 of the following year. 13
  • 14. Framework of CPD Activities This framework outlines the various sections under which credits can be attained in the CPD Program. Participants can use a variety of sections to plan their continuing professional development. 14
  • 15. Framework of CPD Activities Section 1 Accredited Group Leaning Activities 1 credit per hour: No maximum a. Hospital-based rounds, journal clubs or other educational events b. Small-group learning sessions c. Accredited group learning activities held in Canada d. Accredited group learning activities held outside Canada e. Web-based continuing medical education events Documentation Requirements: • Official certificate of attendance or confirmation of participation • Optional-documented learning outcome(s) for practice 15

Framework of CPD Activities Section 2 Other Leaning Activities Non-accredited group events that do not meet the standards for Section 1 (e.g., unaccredited conferences or rounds) and individual learning activities that do not meet the standards for self-directed learning in Section 4 (e.g., journal reading, browsing the internet, etc) 1 credit per hour: Maximum 100 credits per cycle Documentation Requirements: • No documentation required 16

Framework of CPD Activities Section 3 Accredited Self-Assessment Programs 2 credit per hour: No maximum Programs developed or approved by a Royal College accredited provider designed to assist the specialist to identify gaps in knowledge (written self-assessment programs) or performance (simulators) Documentation Requirements: • Confirmation of completion by the program sponsor • Documented learning outcome(s) for practice 17
  • 18. Framework of CPD Activities Section 4 Structured Learning Projects 1 credit per hour: No maximum a. Personal learning projects individually planned learning projects stimulated by questions in practice b. Traineeships-learning activities developed to meet specific professional needs c. Preceptored courses, fellowships, master or PhD programs sponsored by a university or college Documentation Requirements: • Personal learning projects-questions, stimulus, resources and documented learning outcome(s) for practice • Traineeships-learning objectives, learning activities, confirmation of completion by supervisor and documented learning outcome(s) for practice • Courses & programs-learning objectives; confirmation of completion by the university, college or institute; and documented learning outcome(s) for practice 18

Framework of CPD Activities Section 5 Personal Practice Review 2 credit per hour: No maximum Activities that assist specialists with reviewing their personal performance in practice in relation to a defined standard Documentation Requirements: • Focus of the review • Date of completion • Summary of the findings • Documented learning outcome(s) for practice 19
  • 20. Framework of CPD Activities Section 6 Personal Educational Development 1 credit per hour: No maximum a. Teaching-formal presentations b. Research-publications and grant proposal c.   • 21. Additional Information Credit Validation Each year a random sample of three per cent of participants are required to submit documentation to support their CPD Program credits. 21
