General Symptoms ee k Persistent sadness, loss of enjoyment Loss of energy Feeling hopeless, low self-esteem Concentration problems Uncontrollable crying Inability to make decisions Irritability Insomnia or over-sleeping Physical discomfort Stomach and/or digestive problems Sexual problems Weight loss or gain Suicidal or grim thoughts an Individuals exhibiting these symptoms chronically may be clinically depressed. Unfortunately, most victims of depression do not attribute the cause to clinical psychological problems. Without professional help, fits of depression can become increasingly worse in extremity — stimulated by less and less minor physical and mental irritations. Depression in Teenagers In addition to the general symptoms, pay particular attention to these: Drop in school performance Lack of interest in play Lack of social interaction Reckless behavior Runs away from home Excessive concern with failure Drug use and/or alcohol consumption Depression in the Elderly Depression often goes undetected in the elderly because it rarely appears by itself. Additional symptoms are included below, along with a list of medical illnesses that can cause the onset of depression: Delusions, hallucinations Alzheimer's disease Parkinson's disease Multiple sclerosis Vascular dementia Hypothyroidism Systemic lupus erythematosus Certain cancers Chronic insomnia
