  • 1. COMPUTER CATEGORIES Presented by: Dr. Akhlas Ahmed Preston University
  • 2. Computer Categories Computer categories describe the relevant computing power of different makes of computer systems. However, this division is not hard and fast. Rather many categories overlap others in many regards
  • 3. Micro Computer Systems  Also known as Personal computers or PCs.  These are the smallest computer systems.  Microcomputers could be use in networking due to their more processing powers.  Mostly single owner entity therefore could be use for variety of personal and business tasks.  Desktop computers could be placed on top of a table (desk), as they are reduced in size.  Portable computers that includes Laptops, Notebook etc. can be taken anywhere with a person while traveling.
  • 4. Mini Computer Systems  Also known as Midrange Computer Systems.  Larger than Microcomputers.  More powerful than micro computers.  Cost Less to Buy and Maintain than Mainframe computers.  Less powerful and costly than mainframe computers.  Need No Air-conditioning.  Many Applications like scientific, engineering, industrial controls etc.  Popular Network Servers i.e. we may use them as servers in networks.
  • 5. Mainframe Computer Systems  Large, powerful Computers.  Larger than Micro and Mini Computers.  More Expensive than micro and mini computers.  Large Memory Storage.  Accommodate Many Users (Hundreds or Thousands same time (simultaneously).  Large Organizations use Mainframes.  Popular Network Servers  Excellent Database Servers.
  • 6. Super Computers  The Most Powerful Computers.  Can process Thousands of MIPS  Very Costly  Limited Applications
