  • 3. Think Like a BurglarIn order to protect your home from burglary, you first have to think likea crook. Stand in front of your house and try to see what a burglarwould see. – Is your garbage full of packages that hint to expensive items in your home? – Is your garage securely locked? – Do your bushes and shrubs offer perfect hiding places? – Are your windows open or do they appear easy to penetrate?
  • 4. Secure Your HomeOnce you’ve evaluated your home for security risks, secure your home. – Make sure your windows are securely locked. – Close all blinds, so a potential thief cannot see inside. – Remove all garbage that indicates any high-dollar items that may be in the home. – Set a timer so your lights come on in the evenings. – Consider installing a motion-sensitive light near your driveway or garage.

  • 6. Have Your Mail StoppedIf you don’t have a friend come by to check on your house and bringin your mail, make sure you have your mail stopped and yourdeliveries held. When mail and packages pile up, it sends a signal toburglars that you’re out of town.
