The world of social networks is still pretty new to us. When AFSCME entered the social networking sphere, it was really just about claiming our space, so that others don’t claim it for us. This is our Facebook page, which, along with Twitter and MySpace we’ve mainly used as an echo chamber for our website and blog posts, email action alerts, and press releases, etc. Small staff. It’s just myself and two other staff driving the entire online operation.
In August, AFSCME embarked on our Highway to Health Care Tour. We saw this tour of 20 cities in 9 states in 3 weeks as being ripe for a more meaningful and organic social networking component. (Beyond the echo chamber). It was a way to make the tour virtual and also to easily report on the tour daily, indeed multiple times a day. Used the Twitter as the primary medium to report on the tour, and in fact integrated a Twitter feed onto the tour’s website, which you see here. Tweets from our real people on the bus two or three times a day. Though organic, we nonetheless planned out the frequency of tweets and prepped our staff on the bus regarding the tone and general content for the tweet.
With the H2H tour, doubled our FB followers. Going from about 2,000 in the beginning of August to 4,000 at the end. We now have more than 6,000 combined followers/fans on Twitter/FB, one of the largest followings in the labor movement.
We want to continue this momentum. So when Minority Leader Boehner made outrageous (and clearly untrue) statement he had never met an American who supports the public option, we jumped on it. Had the process already mapped out from H2H campaign. You see here the story board of Twitter and FB content. In this case we also tried a new twitter tool – act.ly petition. Discovered that response rate is higher by using an integrated twitter petition than sending folks off site. Currently this is the 3rd best all-time petition.
Retweeted our post to more than 160k on Twitter. Generated more than 900 calls via our click-to-call tool
Made use of FB tagging.
