    • Biotechnologia Application of Bacterial Pigments as Colorant Ahmad Springer ISBN - 13: 9783642245190 Rok wydania: 10/1/2011 Oprawa: Miękka Cena: 211,36 zł Po rabacie: 180,00 złEnvironmental concerns regarding continuous use of synthetic dyes saw a revival in the demand for natural dyes as naturaldyes exhibit better biodegradability and generally have a higher compatibility with the environment. However, one of thelimitations on the use of natural dyes or pigments is the low extraction yield factors (a few grams of pigment per kg of driedraw material). Therefore, the exploitation of other biological sources such as fungi, bacteria and cell cultures offersinteresting alternative. Microbial pigments such as from bacterial origins offer the advantage in terms of productioncompared to pigments extracted from vegetables or animals, due to its simple cell and fast culturing technique. This bookoffers interesting insight into initial works carried out to demonstrate the potential use of bacterial pigment as colorant forvarious applications.www.abe.pl 9
    • Biotechnologia Bacillus thuringiensis Biotechnology Sansinenea Springer ISBN - 13: 9789400730205 Rok wydania: 3/1/2012 Oprawa: Twarda Cena: 634,51 zł Po rabacie: 539,00 złBacillus thuringiensis (Bt) has been used as a biopesticide in agriculture, forestry and mosquito control because of itsadvantages of specific toxicity against target insects, lack of polluting residues and safety to non-target organisms. Theinsecticidal properties of this bacterium are due to insecticidal proteins produced during sporulation. Despite theseecological benefits, the use of Bt biopesticides has lagged behind the synthetic chemicals. Genetic improvement of Btnatural strains, in particular Bt recombination, offers a promising means of improving efficacy and cost-effectiveness of Bt-based bioinsecticide products to develop new biotechnological applications. On the other hand, the different Bacillusspecies have important biotechnological applications; one of them is carried out by producing secondary metabolites, whichare the study object of natural product chemistry. The amazing structural variability of these compounds has attracted thecuriosity of chemists and the biological activities possessed by natural products have inspired the pharmaceutical industry tosearch for lead structures in microbial extracts. Screening of microbial extracts reveals the large structural diversity of naturalcompounds with broad biological activities, such as antimicrobial, antiviral, immunosuppressive, and antitumor activities thatenable the bacterium to survive in its natural environment. These findings widen the target range of Bacillus spp., in specialB. thuringiensis, besides insecticidal activity and help people to better understand its role in soil ecosystem. 10 www.abe.pl

    • Biotechnologia Microorganisms in Sustainable Agriculture and Biotechnology Satyanarayana Springer ISBN - 13: 9789400722132 Rok wydania: 1/1/2012 Oprawa: Twarda Cena: 846,09 zł Po rabacie: 719,00 złThis review of recent developments in our understanding of the role of microbes in sustainable agriculture and biotechnologycovers a research area with enormous untapped potential. Chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other agriculturalinputs derived from fossil fuels have increased agricultural production, yet growing awareness and concern over theiradverse effects on soil productivity and environmental quality cannot be ignored. The high cost of these products, thedifficulties of meeting demand for them, and their harmful environmental legacy have encouraged scientists to developalternative strategies to raise productivity, with microbes playing a central role in these efforts. One application is the use ofsoil microbes as bioinoculants for supplying nutrients and/or stimulating plant growth. Some rhizospheric microbes areknown to synthesize plant growth-promoters, siderophores and antibiotics, as well as aiding phosphorous uptake. The last40 years have seen rapid strides made in our appreciation of the diversity of environmental microbes and their possiblebenefits to sustainable agriculture and production. The advent of powerful new methodologies in microbial genetics, molecular biology and biotechnology has only quickened the pace of developments. The vital part played by microbes insustaining our planet’s ecosystems only adds urgency to this enquiry. Culture-dependent microbes already contribute muchto human life, yet the latent potential of vast numbers of uncultured—and thus untouched—microbes, is enormous. Culture-independent metagenomic approaches employed in a variety of natural habitats have alerted us to the sheer diversity ofthese microbes, and resulted in the characterization of novel genes and gene products. Several new antibiotics andbiocatalysts have been discovered among environmental genomes and some products have already been commercialized.Meanwhile, dozens of industrial products currently formulated in large quantities from petrochemicals, such as ethanol... 14 www.abe.pl

    • Biotechnologia Molecular Marker Applications for Improving Sugar Content in Sugarcane Swapna Springer ISBN - 13: 9781461422563 Rok wydania: 3/14/2012 Oprawa: Miękka Cena: 211,36 zł Po rabacie: 180,00 złSugarcane, an important source of sugar, plays a substantial role in world economy. As a C4 plant this has very efficientsystem for carbohydrate metabolism through photosynthesis. Crop improvement efforts have concentrated mainly onimproving quality traits, mainly sugar content. This being a complex trait, involves a large number of target genes in themetabolic pathway. The complex polyploid nature of the crop makes it more difficult to pin point the key players in thiscomplex pathway. Despite its importance, little is known about the exact mechanism of sucrose accumulation and itsregulation in sugarcane. Many enzymes have been proposed to have a key role in determining the ultimate sucrose contentin sugarcane. There are evidences to show that some of these like Sucrose Phosphate Synthase (SPS) and SucroseSynthase (SuSy) are encoded by multiple genes that show organ specifity in sugarcane. Especially in a crop like sugarcanewhere the classical techniques are of limited help in elucidating various genetic complexities, molecular techniques can be ofhelp in throwing some light on the grey areas. Molecular marker strategies will be of help in understanding some aspects ofsucrose metabolism and its regulation in this crop, thus complementing the ongoing crop improvement programmes. 16 www.abe.pl

His research greatly advanced the understanding of rhizosphere processes and traceelement uptake by plants and he published extensively in a variety of plant nutrition areas. While doing agricultural researchin West Africa in 1996, Dr. Marschner contracted malaria and passed away, and until now this legacy title went unrevised.Despite the passage of time, it remains the definitive reference on plant mineral nutrition. Great progress has been made inthe understanding of various aspects of plant nutrition and in recent years the view on the mode of action of mineralnutrients in plant metabolism and yield formation has shifted. Nutrients are not only viewed as constituents of plantcompounds (constructing material), enzymes and electron transport chains but also as signals regulating plant metabolismvia complex signal transduction networks. In these networks, phytohormones also play an important role. Principles of themode of action of phytohormones and examples of the interaction of hormones and mineral nutrients on source and sinkstrength and yield formation are discussed in this edition. Phytohormones have a role as chemical messengers (internalsignals) to coordinate development and responses to environmental stimuli at the whole plant level. These and many othermolecular developments are covered in the long-awaited new edition. Esteemed plant nutrition expert and HorstMarschners daughter, Dr. Petra Marschner, together with a team of key co-authors who worked with Horst Marschner onhis research, now present a thoroughly updated and revised third edition of Marschners "Mineral Nutrition of Higher Plants",maintaining its value for plant nutritionists worldwide. This title is a long-awaited revision of the standard reference on plantmineral nutrition. It features full coverage and new discussions of the latest molecular advances. I 28 www.abe.pl

A plethora of studies have shown that aquatic organisms frommost taxa and functional groups respond to minute concentrations of chemical substances released by other organisms. However, our knowledge of this "chemical network" is still negligible. Chemical interactions can be divided into two largersub-areas based on the function of the chemical substance. First, there are interactions where chemical substances aretoxic to other organisms and are used as a defence against consumers (including both herbivores and predators) or aweapon against competitors (allelopathy). We are causingthe sixth major extinction event in the history of life on Earth. With the Earth’s climate, flora, and fauna changing rapidly, there is a pressing need to understand terrestrial ecosystem processes and their sensitivity to environmental and bioticchanges. This book offers a framework to do just that.Ecosystem ecology regards living organisms, including people, and the elements of their environment as components of asingle integrated system. The comprehensive coverage in this textbook examines the central processes at work in terrestrialecosystems, including their freshwater components. It traces the flow of energy, water, carbon, and nutrients from theirabiotic origins to their cycles through plants, animals, and decomposer organisms. As well as detailing the processesthemselves, the book goes further to integrate them at various scales of magnitude—those of the ecosystem, the widerlandscape and the globe. It synthesizes recent advances in ecology with established and emerging ecosystem theory tooffer a wide-ranging survey of ecosystem patterns and processes in our terrestrial environment.Featuring review questions at the end of each chapter, suggestions for further reading, and a glossary of ecological terms,Principles of Terrestrial Ecosystem Ecology is a vitally relevant text suitable for study in all courses in ecosystem ecology.Resource managers and researchers in many fields will welcome its thorough presentation of ecosystem essentials. 56 www.abe.pl

He was the first President of the British Ecological Society and the first chair of the Field StudiesCouncil. His work as a botanist is considered seminal and he is recognized as one of the giants of ecology throughout theworld. Ecology underpins the principles and practices of modern conservation and the maintenance of biodiversity. Itexplains the causes of, and offers solutions to, problems of climate change. Yet ecology is a young science, barely 100years old. Its origins lie in phytogeography, the naming and mapping of plants. Shaping Ecology is a book about a multi-faceted man whose friends included Bertrand Russell, Marie Stopes, Julian Huxley, GM Trevelyan, and Solly Zuckerman.Historical context is provided by Tansleys family for his parents moved in the Fabian-socialist world of John Ruskin andOctavia Hill, both instrumental in the foundation of the National Trust. While Britain was relatively slow to protect its greenspaces and wildlife, it did establish in 1913 the first professional Ecological Society in the world. Tansley was its President.Organising the British Vegetation Committee and initiating a series of International Phytogeographic Excursions, he changedphytogeography into ecology.www.abe.pl 57

The seemingly “crazy” animals demonstrated thatseveral stress paradigms are outdated and have to be reconsidered. The book describes the general stress responses in microorganisms, plants, and animals to abiotic and biotic, to naturaland anthropogenic stressors. These stress responses include the activation of oxygen, the biotransformation system, thestress proteins, and the metal-binding proteins. The potential of stress response lies in the transcription of genes, whereasthe actual response is manifested by proteins and metabolites. Yet, not all stress responses are in the genes: micro-RNAsand epigenetics play central roles. Multiple stressors, such as environmental realism, do not always act additively; they mayeven diminish one another. Furthermore, one stressor often prepares the subject for the next one to come and may produceextended lifespans and increased offspring numbers, thus causing shifts in population structures. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of the ecological and evolutionary effects of stress. 58 www.abe.pl

Every habitat on earth has been impacted by natural disturbances such as volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, fires, floods, and droughts. Humans have contributed many additional disturbances such as mining, urbanization, forestry, agriculture, fishing, and recreation. These anthropogenic disturbances modify and often exacerbate the effects ofthe natural disturbances. Together, they result in the abrupt loss of biomass or ecosystem structure and function to createdenuded surfaces where novel mixtures of native and non-native microbes, plants, and animals establish, grow, and die.The Biology of Disturbed Habitats examines both natural and anthropogenic disturbances in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. It explores how nutrients and productivity are altered in the disturbed habitats, the effects of disturbance on biodiversity, andthe spatial and temporal dynamics of organisms that colonize disturbed habitats. This book also addresses how to managedisturbances through appropriate conservation and restoration measures, and discusses how climate change andoverpopulation now represent the most challenging disturbances at a global scale.www.abe.pl 61

Theseanswers will not be easy to find and some highly innovative research is called for. Considerable progress has been made inunderstanding the fine details of natural photosynthesis and there has been an emergence and growth of nanotechnology. This discussion will look at applying new knowledge to the old problems. There is a growing conviction that the only realprospect for our long-term energy provision relies on the ability to collect and store sunlight in the form of chemical potential. The creation of artificial systems to exploit the basic chemistry of photosynthesis to produce hydrogen or other fuels is aconcept that crops up each time there is an escalation in the price of oil. In addition, we need to mop up the excess carbondioxide left over from our present era of profligate fossil fuel consumption. The net result is an upsurge in the urgency todesign effective artificial photosynthetic systems. This is a global problem which grows more important on a daily basis andit will soon become the dominant scientific issue. The researchers who were highly active in the 1970s and early 1980s -- aperiod that witnessed the great boom in solar energy research -- will soon be lost and there is a real danger of futuregenerations reinventing the wheel. It seems critical that this expertise is passed on to new researchers, with a need to focuson possible solutions to long-standing problems. This topical and important area of science covers many disciplines. Thecombination of biology, chemistry, physics and theory makes for an exciting blend of discussion points In this volume thetopics covered include: * Electronic energy transfer * Fuel production / carbon dioxide reduction 84 www.abe.pl

They assess their surroundings, estimate how much energy they need for particular goals, and then realise theoptimum variant. They take measures to control certain environmental resources. They perceive themselves and candistinguish between self and non-self. They process and evaluate information and then modify their behaviouraccordingly. These highly diverse competences are made possible by parallel sign(alling)-mediated communicationprocesses within the plant body (intraorganismic), between the same, related and different species (interorganismic), andbetween plants and non-plant organisms (transorganismic). Intraorganismic communication involves sign-mediatedinteractions within cells (intracellular) and between cells (intercellular). This is crucial in coordinating growth and development, shape and dynamics. Such communication must function both on the local level and between widely separated plant parts. This allows plants to coordinate appropriate response behaviours in a differentiated manner, depending on their currentdevelopmental status and physiological influences. Lastly, this volume documents how plant ecosphere inhabitantscommunicate with each other to coordinate their behavioural patterns, as well as the role of viruses in these highly dynamicinteractional networks.www.abe.pl 85

Tag-based approaches will maintain their important role in life and biomedical science, because longer readlengths are often not required to obtain meaningful data for many applications. Whereas genome re-sequencing and denovo sequencing will benefit from ever more powerful sequencing methods, analytical applications can be performed by tag-based approaches, where the focus shifts from sequencing power to better means of data analysis and visualization forcommon users. Today Next Generation Sequence data require powerful bioinformatics expertise that has to be convertedinto easy-to-use data analysis tools. During this time, forests have provided people with countless goods and services, including wood, medicine, food, clean water and recreation. In making use of forest resources, people throughout history have frequently organizedthemselves and established both formal and informal rules. However, just as the discipline of Forestry had previously limitedand concentrated the function of forests to the timber it provides, the popular understanding of Social Forestry hasrestricted it to a Forestry sub-topic that deals with welfare, without any connection to income-generation, and is practicedonly in developing countries. This volume introduces the concepts of Social Forestry to the student, gives examples of itspractice around the world and attempts to anticipate developments in its future. It is an attempt at a comprehensive state-of-the-art review, encompassing the science of carbon sequestrationin forests, management of forests for carbon and other values, and the socio-economic and policy implications andchallenges of managing forests for carbon.Forests are critical to mitigating the effects of global climate change because they are large storehouses of carbon and havethe ability to continually absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. But today, emissions from land use, land use change, and forestry, mostly due to deforestation in the tropics, are estimated at 17% of total annual global CO2 emissions, a figurelarger than the transportation sector. While the basic principles of the carbon cycle are well known, there are significantuncertainties about the actual behavior of many of its sinks and sources. Much work has been done on the science of forestcarbon, deforestation, and various climate policy responses, however, what is lacking is a comprehensive review of allaspects of the challenge. This book provides such a review by taking a holistic perspective on the subject. By creating apublication that outlines the research that has been done on forest carbon, pointing out what we know and what we don’tknow, and the implications for policy decisions. 134 www.abe.pl

Unfortunately, however, forest biodiversity is threatened to a serious degree in nearly all countries. Therefore, many countries have agreedto be parties to international agreements focused on maintaining, restoring, and monitoring biodiversity; further, thesecountries have agreed to report to international bodies on forest biodiversity status and trends. NFIs are the primary sourceof large-scale information available for this purpose, but the large variety of definitions, protocols, sampling designs, and plotconfigurations used by NFIs makes comparable international reporting extremely difficult. This book presents the results ofWorking Group 3 of COST Action E43 in the development of harmonization techniques for common reporting of estimatesof forest biodiversity indicators using NFI data. Harmonization tests were carried out on a large common data basecontaining raw NFI data from 13 European countries and the USA. Our fundamental question here is whyFinland succeeded to stop deforestation a century ago and why not the same is feasible in the contemporary tropicalcountries? This book presents a novel integrated theory within which this case study on Finland and contemporary modelingof underlying causes of tropical deforestation are developed. Finland remains the worlds second largest net exporter offorest products, while maintaining the highest forest cover in Europe. A transition from deforestation to sustainable industrialforestry took place in Finland during the first part of the 20th century. The underlying causes of this transition are comparedvia our theory with deforestation in 74 contemporary tropical countries. Both appear similar and support our theory. Theinteraction of public policies and market institutions has appeared to be critical during this transition. The studys findingssuggest that private forest ownership with a continuous increase in the real value of forests and alleviation of poverty undernon-corruptive conditions has been a necessary, but not a sufficient, condition for this transition. In a parallel way publicpolicies have also proved to be a necessary, but not sufficient, condition in this transition. The conclusion is that socialisticforestry along with corruption is artificially maintaining too low values in the tropical forests. Publicitycampaigns exhort us to plant yet more. Yet until recently comparatively little was known about the root causes of thephysical changes that attend their growth. Since trees typically increase in size by three to four orders of magnitude in theirjourney to maturity, this gap in our knowledge has been a crucial issue to address. Here at last is a synthesis of the currentstate of our knowledge about both the causes and consequences of ontogenetic changes in key features of tree structureand function. During their ontogeny, trees undergo numerous changes in their physiological function, the structure andmechanical properties of their wood, and overall architecture and allometry. This book examines the central interplaybetween these changes and tree size and age. It also explores the impact these changes can have, at the level of theindividual tree, on the emerging characteristics of forest ecosystems at various stages of their development. The analysisoffers an explanation for the importance of discriminating between the varied physical properties arising from the nexus ofsize and age, as well as highlighting the implications these ontogenetic changes have for commercial forestry and climatechange. This important and timely summation of our knowledge base in this area, written by highly respected researchers, will be of huge interest, not only to researchers, but also to forest managers and silviculturists.www.abe.pl 141

The Mekong River fans out overan area of about 40,000 sq kilometers and over the course of many millennia has produced a region of fertile alluvial soilsand constant flows of energy. Today about a fourth of the Delta is under rice cultivation, making this area one of the premierrice granaries in the world. The Delta has always proven a difficult environment to manipulate, however, and because ofpopulation pressures, increasing acidification of soils, and changes in the Mekongs flow, environmental problems haveintensified. The changing way in which the region has been linked to larger flows of commodities and capital over time hasalso had an impact on the region: For example, its re-emergence in recent decades as a major rice-exporting area haslinked it inextricably to global markets and their vicissitudes. And most recently, the potential for sea level increasesbecause of global warming has added a new threat. Because most of the region is on average only a few meters above sealevel and because any increase of sea level will change the complex relationship between tides and down-river water flow, the Mekong Delta is one of the areas in the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. How governmental policyand resident populations have in the past and will in coming decades adapt to climate change as well as several otheremerging or ongoing environmental and economic problems is the focus of this collection.www.abe.pl 147

The vital part played by microbes insustaining our planets ecosystems only adds urgency to this enquiry. Culture-dependent microbes already contribute muchto human life, yet the latent potential of vast numbers of uncultured--and thus untouched--microbes, is enormous. Culture-independent metagenomic approaches employed in a variety of natural habitats have alerted us to the sheer diversity ofthese microbes, and resulted in the characterization of novel genes and gene products. Several new antibiotics andbiocatalysts have been discovered among environmental genomes and some products have already been commercialized.Meanwhile, dozens of industrial products currently formulated in large quantities from petrochemicals... 154 www.abe.pl

In that respect, sustainable agriculture isnot a classical and narrow science. Instead of solving problems using the classical painkiller approach that treats onlynegative impacts, sustainable agriculture treats problem sources. As most actual society issues are now intertwined, global, and fast-developing, sustainable agriculture will bring solutions to build a safer world. This book gathers review articles that analyze current agricultural issues and knowledge, then propose alternative solutions. It will therefore help all scientists, decision-makers, professors, farmers and politicians who wish to build a safe agriculture, energy and food system for future generations. 160 www.abe.pl
