MY DEAR FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR DR HAMID HUSSAINS ARTICLE WAS PRIMER OF MY THOUGHTS BELOW
Marked for Death - Assassination Attempts on Senior Officers of Pakistan Army
Hamid Hussain IS APPENDED AT BOTTOM OF THIS POST
Dearest Dr Hamid Hussain
Your article takes me back to 1857 .
Was Adnan Rashids act of attacking Musharraf Treason or Just resistance ?
My maternal grandfathers village in Aligarh consisted of Sherwani,Yusufzai and Shinwari Pathans.
Mohallah Turzayan in Sikandara Rao contributed maximum numbers to the Light Cavalry from 1780 to 1857.
Bangla in the same village was second.
In short Taluqa Sultanpur of Sikandara Rao was a cavalry Taluqa.
The house of Sultan Khans Shinwari ancestors still stands in Sikandara Rao.And some sabres may still be found there.
Sikandara Rao contributed almost three regiments of cavalry to Bengal Army regular and irregular cavalry. Sultan Khan my maternal grandfathers ancestors served in 1st , 3rd , 5th and 8th Light Cavalry.
5th and 8th Light Cavalry provided nucleus of 1st and 3rd Punjab Cavalry as Punjabis and Pathans of that day knew sweet f_____ all about cavalry drills.
1857 was traumatic with 9 great grand uncles of Sultan Khan being blown from guns or exile to Nepal.
Sultan Khans direct branch of the family did not join the rebellion but disbandment of 5th Light Cavalry was a traumatic event for the Talukdar family. Sikandara Rao village itself remained neutral and never joined the rebellion all
around it in Aligarh.
When his grandfathers unit 5th Light Cavalry was disbanded in Peshawar on no grounds a phrase was coined in the family " never join the army as it is army of the British" .
I salute the British officers of private army of English East India Company serving in 5th Light Cavalry when they protested against the regiments disbandment and actually threw their spurs and sabres in the pile of
the 5th Light Cavalrys disbanded mens sabres and spurs !
Sultan Khans father joined the Punjab Police and retired as a prosecuting inspector from Hoshiarpur. Sultan Khan was sent to the prestigious English House Boarding School of Aligar established for Talukdars and landlords son and
later studied at MAO College. He joined Revenue Service and was Deputy Chief Accounts officer. He later opted for Pakistan and served as Deputy Secretary Ministry of Finance , Member Finance KDA and Member Jute Board
Pakistan.He retired in early 1960s.
In 1982 five cadets including this scribe sat in silence of ante room at battalion mess 1st Pakistan battalion. Included were a present serving corps commander , Haneef of 68 Long Course , one whose father was killed in 1965
war.The discussion was Islambouli and whether it was possible to kill pakistans military usurper zia on march 1983 passing out of 67 Long Course. In the end votes were cast and all four had cold feet and idea dismissed ! I did not
join group photograph of the course with the illegitimate usurper zia immediately after passing out .
All along my cadetship and army career I held the view that Zia was a military usurper , hence illegitimate and any attempt to remove him was just resistance . So my interpretation of 17 August 1988 was that it was a just removal of
a military usurper .
Now the attack on Musharraf carried out by Adnan Rashid. The narrow interpretation is that it was treason. But broader and another valid interpretation is that it was rebellion against a military usurper which raises Adnan Rashids
stature higher than Iftikhar Chaudhry or any judge of Pakistan.
The line between resistance and rebellion is very narrow.
How Musharraf sold FATA to USA as a false centre of gravity and hid all real Taliban in Quetta is also a multifaceted act which may be called PATRIOTISM or DOUBLE DEALING . As FATA as a region was destroyed for no
reason. My study meticulously carried out in 2011-14 proves that FATA had nominal links with attacks on US forces in Afghanistan and was falsely painted by Musharraf as real centre of gravity of Terrorism. The attacks on Musharraf
in December 2003 cannot be termed as TREASON . They were far more complex . Muslim elite has been using Islam as a condom to get political advantage since Sir Syeds time . This has introduced a confusion of principle in
Pakistan which continues.

Recent deaths of Mulla Omar in Karachi and Haqqanis death in a state safehouse dismiss the entire alllegation that FATA was centre of terrorism.
Constitutionally speaking SSG and PAF soldiers who attacked Musharraf could be also called exercisors of ARTICLE SIX of Constitution.
Was Treason committed by Musharraf on 12 October 1999 or by Adnan Rashid . I think it was Musharraf who committed treason and Adnan Rashid who was exercising Article Six.
Musharraf removes prime minister and pakistans third rate judges validate it because musharraf has a HUGE BAMBOO WITH WHICH HE CAN TEAR THEIR ARSES APART !
Adnan Rashid attacks AN ILLEGITIMATE USURPER AND IS RE -SENTENCED TO DEATH BY SAME THIRD RATE JUDGES BECAUSE ADNAN RASHID HAS NO BUMBOOO TO TEAR JUDGES ARSES APART !
(HE WAS CONDEMNED BY COURT MARTIAL AND SENTENCE CONFIRMED BY THIRD RATE JUDGES WHOSE ONLY IDEA OF LEGITIMACY IS TO PROTECT THEIR ARSES FROM MUSHARRAF BUMBOOOO)
WHAT IS ISLAMIC HISTORY ?
KHULAFA KARBALA AND MARTIAL LAW !!!!!
THIS IS PAKISTANI LEGTIMACY !
THE TROUBLE STARTS WHEN A GENERAL REMOVES THE GOVERNMENT AND THE TROUBLE STARTS WHEN PAKSTANS ASSEMBLY DID NOT WANT TO MAKE A CONSTITUTION FROM 1947 TO 1956 AS IT WOULD
BRING BENGALIS INTO A POWER BY AN ELECTION !
I am not Islamist and I have no interest in Islam but this is my conclusion.
Pakistan is not about Islam .It was about economics and in Pakistan legitimacy has always been murky.
We continue to live in myths and contradictions.
IN PAKISTAN SIMPLE CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLE IS JISS KEEE LAATHEE US KEE BHAINS
SO IT IS
SIKHA SHAHEE IT WAS CALLED BEFORE 1849
LAND OF THE PURE OR IMPURE ? DIFFICULT QUESTION !
EVEN USA IS PARTY IN THIS HYPOCRISY
NO ONE IS ASKING IN USA HOW US GOVERNMENT DOLED 25 BILLIO USD TO MUSHARRAF AS AID IN WAR AGAINST TERROR WHEN HE WAS ACTUALLY HIDING OBL , MULLA OMAR AND HAQQANI !
NO ONE IS QUESTIONING THE PAKISTANI STATE IN US GOVERNMENT BECAUSE PAKISTANI STATE IN 2011 SOLD OBL TO USA AND HELPED OBAMA IN WINNING HIS US ELECTIONS !

Heroes versus Opportunists
A.H Amin
Published in the NATION as ” The Last Remedy”
When all remedies fail and all wisdom is promiscuously degraded into naked pragmatic opportunism twisted to suit personal ends glorified as idealistic collective aspirations , the last remedy is neither outwardly brilliant , nor apparently wise, but one that
alters the course of history at best and instills some semblance of fear of God in the men at the helm of affairs !
Consider the following incidents, all precise historical realities, some stranger than fiction, albeit true!
On pretext of training and with a design to hurt the religious sentiments of his soldiers an over strict martinet of a British commanding officer denied Eid leave to sepoys of 4/2nd Punjab Regiment in the not too distant year of 1938 . Somewhere in the
field near Amangarh Ranges in Nowshera one fine winter night in November 1938 , a day before Eid ,a Punjabi Muslim soldier decided that the matter could only be vindicated by a caliber 303 Lee Enfield Rifle ! During the night this indomitable soul ran
amok and shot dead four British officers , the first being the commanding officer of the Regiment and also three Indian VCOs ,more loyal than the king ! The British hushed up the incident, as few in Pakistan know today , , keeping in line with foxy old
policy of ” conspiracy of silence” ! The unit was quietly disbanded! Nevertheless fear of God was driven home well, albeit backed by the mighty swift force of kinetic energy of 303 caliber projectiles! The assailant was killed, but the example he set was
well understood, i.e. do not underestimate the religious sentiments of your men!
In yet another incident earlier in 1904 Sepoy Kabul Khan , hailing from a fine P[akhtun tribe , the Abur Rehman Khel sub section of the Bahlolzai section of the illustriopus Mahsud tribe shot dead Captain J.B Bowring the Political SAgent of Waziristan
in the middle of the nioght through the head ! In a subsequent dialogue soon after the incident the simple sepoy explained that he had a clear conscience since ” Bowring was sleeping with his feet towards Mecca ” and “therefore I shot him “ ! Later
Kabul Khan surrendered , threw his rifle without fear of death and was shot dead , dying with a clean conscience !
In 1984 two valiant Sikhs inscribed another lesson in the sands of time with their blood ! No heavy ranked corps commanders like Brar who slavishly followed orders to storm the Golden Temple despite being a Sikh in name ! These were simple souls ,
one an ordinary constable Satwant Singh and the other a Sub Inspector Beant Singh ! On the morning of 31st October 1984 at 9.38 precisely these two fearless men pumped seven bullets of a Sten Gun and revolver into the vital organs of Durga Devi ! No
missiles test fired at unknown test sites but simple bullets which did the job which no missiles may ever ironically do ! The men died but the message that they gave in martyrdom lives !
In 1978 Egyptian president Anwar Sadat a complexed man inflicted with a highly dangerous disease ofcshameless opportunism betrayed the Arab Muslim cause at Camp David ! This betrayal was avenged by a lieutenant name Khalid Islambouli in 1981
!
Islambouli was executed , he never perhaps wanted to be a red tape without conscience , but he remains a hero in the eyes of many who have the heart to feel and the courage to think beyond immediate self interest !
The Holy Bible says ” What shall it profit a man , if he shall gain the whole world and lose his soul ! (Bible-Mark 8:36).Compare this with the shameless opportunism of so many Suhartos and Sadats , the apparently wise men who lost wars but ruled their
own people with help of Western powers ! I hold that militarily 1973 War was won by Israelis ! Perhaps the only war that the Israeils may lose is the present one against the guerrilla forces of Islam !
What is the life of a man ? Pilot Officer V.A Roseware who perished in the Battlle of Britain in 1940 explained this enigma in a letter written to his mother shortly before his death at the age of 25 0r 26 in the following words ” The universe is so vast and
so ageless that the lifec of one man can only be justified by the measure of his sacrifice” !
In Armughan I Hijaz the poet philosopher Iqbal says ” Why there is no storm in your river ? Why your ego is nota true Muslim? It is absoolutely useless to complain against the destiny determined by God ? Why are you notb the destiny of God
yourself ? “
The Kamikaze pilots who crashed theior planes sacrificing their lives in second world war had the following motto ” Like a blossom today then scattered , life is like a delicate flower ! How can one expect the fragrance to last forver ? “
When will leaders of Islam get out of the whirlpool of cheap existence and opportunism ! Bending obsequiously , and clicking their heels while shaking hands with US assistant secretaries of state !
Acclaiming their masters and basking in the glory of a passive foreign policy which has divided the Muslim world , facilitating the US task to defeat all Islamic forces piecemeal , one by one while , many others run after carrots suspended in mid air by
USA as baits ! All is well while Syria is attacked by Israeli fighters while US Assistant Secretary of state visits Islamabad !
What is the idea of life ! To get a green card ! To build a palatial bungalow in Zamzama Scheme or Bani Gala ! To make costly condominiums and penthouses next to a creek overflowing with the phenomenal load of half the gutters of Karachi !
When I sometimes sleep a student of mine in Armour school shakes my shoulder in a dream ! Tiwana then a captain as I saw him in 1990-91 , later embracing ,martyrdom in Kargil in 1999 as a major tells me ” Sir I am very unhappy , do you know how
we died , do you know what happened to us , we had volunteered to fight for the cause of Islam” ! Once this dream ends I imagine the heroes of those rocky pinnacles!
” Piles of bones, once animated by the proud breath of life ,now merely scattered limbs ,nameless remains , human chaos ,sacred agglomeration of countless relics – God shall recognize you , the dust of heroes !
Perhaps history will not forgive leaders whop betrayed their nations! Leaders who usurped power by virtue of their institutional positions earned after years of cheap manoeuvring and sycophancy !
What is the use of massive military hardwares , impressive missiles , macho camouflaged uniforms once the leaders have no will to fight ! What is the use of a top heavy military bureaucracy which seeks glory in playing the part of the pragmatic docile
subsidiary vassal !
Why do common people become suicide bombers ! It is so because conventional armies of the Muslim world have to failed to do their job in battle , yet they enjoy moviong around with swagger and bravado claiming that they are the most martial military
machines in the history of mankind !
The pleasant future that the US policy makers may have promised the relatively naieve Pakistani policy makers is essentially only a carrot to make the mule do its job !

Marked for Death - Assassination Attempts on Senior Officers of Pakistan Army
Hamid Hussain
Since 2002, Pakistan army is involved in a rapidly evolving struggle against terrorism. When the first shots of this new war were fired, Pakistan army was neither trained nor prepared for the conflict. Confusion, complacency and utter incompetence at all
levels gave an upper hand to the extremists all over the country. First, the government lost the control of tribal areas followed by the loss of the large swaths of the settled division of Malakand. Militants established themselves in tribal regions and from
there launched forays into major cities. They abducted, killed and bombed civilians and soldiers alike all over the country sending the whole nation into a deep depression.
Police and paramilitary forces faced the brunt of the militant onslaught. Many soldiers and disproportionately large numbers of young officers of army were killed and wounded in clashes with militants. Militants embarked on a deliberate course of
targeting senior officers of security forces including army. Many senior police, paramilitary and army officers were targeted by militants. This was a multipronged strategy with objectives of eliminating individual officers to shake morale of officer corps
and on psychological plane sending the signal to general public that security forces couldn’t protect them.
On June 10, 2004, the convoy of Karachi Corps Commander Lieutenant General (later General and VCOAS) Ahsan Saleem Hayat came under attack that resulted in death of eight soldiers. Ahsan’s driver and co-driver were shot killing co-driver on the
spot while driver was seriously wounded and later died. Driver’s foot remained on the accelerator and car kept moving but in a zigzag fashion. Ahsan’s ADC seated behind the driver got hold of the steering wheel and got out of the ambush. Attacker’s
plan was to first detonate an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) stopping Ahsan’s car and then spray it with bullets to finish the job. IED failed to explode and attackers hiding near the bridge opened fire killing several guards but Ahsan survived.
On February 25, 2008, Surgeon General of Pakistan army Lieutenant General Mushtaq Ahmad Beg was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself near his car stopped at a traffic signal in the garrison town of Rawalpindi. He is the senior most army
officer killed by militants. On November 19, 2008, retired Major General Amir Faisal Alvi was shot and killed in Islamabad. Alvi had served as GOC of army’s elite Special Forces Special Services Group (SSG) and involved in many early operations in
tribal areas. He was known for joining his troops in the heat of the operations that boosted the morale of his troops. After his retirement, militants had issued several threats to him and finally succeeded in killing him.
In a three week time period, three serving Brigadiers of Pakistan army were targeted in the capital city of Islamabad sending shock waves among the officer community. On October 22, 2009, Brigadier Moinuddin Ahmad along with his driver was shot
dead in Islamabad. A week later, another Brigadier Waqar Ahmad Malik was shot in Islamabad. He was director Defence Services Guards (DSG). On November 05, 2009, Brigadier Sohail and his driver were shot and injured when their car was
ambushed in Islamabad.
On December 04, 2009, terrorists attacked a mosque in Rawalpindi cantonment used by soldiers and their family members killing more than forty people including several children. Two suicide bombers blew themselves inside the mosque while other
two threw hand grenades and sprayed the congregation with automatic rifle fire. This was one of the most devastating attacks on army fraternity. The dead included Major General Bilal Omar, Brigadier Abdul Rauf, Lieutenant Colonel Manzoor Saeed
and Lieutenant Colonel Fakhar ul Hassan. The only son of then Peshawar Corps Commander Lieutenant General Masood Aslam was also among the dead as well as sons of Major General Nasim Riaz, Brigadier Mumtaz, Brigadier Sadiq, Colonel Qaiser,
Colonel Shukran and Colonel Shabbir. Fathers of Major General Awais Mustafa and Colonel Farooq Awan were also among the dead. Colonel Kaleem Zubair lost his father as well as his son in the carnage. This was the most heart breaking tragedy until
militants trumped their own brutality when in December 2014 they attacked Army Public School in Peshawar killing around 150 students as well as many teacher.
On September 07, 2011, two suicide bombers targeted the residence of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Frontier Corps (FC) – Baluchistan Brigadier Farrukh Shahzad. In a devastating precision and coordination, first suicide bomber rammed the
explosive laden car targeting FC vehicles waiting to escort the DIG-FC who was coming out of his residence killing several soldiers. Five minutes later rushing through the chaos, second suicide bomber was able to barge through the damaged gate and
partially demolished walls of the residence and detonated his explosives. The second attack inside the residence killed the wife of Brigadier Shahzad, FC administrator Colonel Khalid Masood and injured Brigadier Shahzad and one of his children.
Thirteen FC personnel lost their lives and another sixteen injured in this incident.
In September 2013, GOC of Swat Major General Sanaullah Khan Niazi was visiting a remote outpost in Dir when his vehicle hit an IED killing him and Lieutenant Colonel Tauseef Ahmad. It was a planned attack and later militants released a video of
the attack. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Mullah Fazlullah claimed that they were planning to target the Corps Commander of Peshawar based XI Corps but Niazi’s turn came first.
Though rare, but militants have also attempted to kidnap officers or their family members with the objective of exchanging them for the release of captured militant leaders. Son-in-Law of then Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General
Tariq Majeed; the senior most officer of Pakistani armed forces was abducted by militants and kept in Waziristan for several years. He was from a wealthy family and militants asked for a large sum of money as well as release of some high profile
militants under army’s custody. He was released but the terms of his release are not known. On October 11, 2012, Brigadier Tahir Masood who had retired a week before from the media wing of Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) was kidnapped right from
the heart of Islamabad while his driver was killed. To date, he has not been recovered and believed to be in the custody of militants in Islamabad.
There were two major assassination attempts on then Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and President General Pervez Mussharraf in December 2003. The first attack was on December 14, 2003 when terrorists planted large amount of explosives under a
bridge. When Mussharraf’s convoy reached the bridge, it was blown but no one was killed. Over five hundred pounds of explosives were placed on the farther side of the bridge and explosive charge was detonated by an operative on the site via a
telephone call to the receiver attached to the explosive charge. Terrorists hoped that by this placement the oncoming car of General Mussharraf would either hit the concrete flying in car’s direction or ram into the exposed steel bars. In case of missing
these two eventualities, the car may plunge into the huge gap in the bridge slamming down in the bed (see the pictures below). The operator in an effort to be not too visible positioned himself in such a way that obscured his direct visual contact with the
convoy. The result was that he couldn’t time the detonation with the car getting on the bridge. These precious few seconds saved everybody.
Two weeks later on December 25, Mussharraf’s convoy was hit by two suicide car bombs in quick succession. The driver of first attack was later identified as a Kashmiri named Mohammad Jamil. The skin of his face blew off clean from skeletal
structure preserving features. An army plastic surgeon reconstructed it and it matched the picture on burned out identity card. His cell phone was damaged but SIM was intact and from the calls as well as his diary recovered from his home provided some
clues. The driver of second car was a Pathan named Khaleeq. The tracking of this piece of the investigation led to discovery that two soldiers of elite Special Services Group (SSG) were helping militants. One named Dogar had served in the security
detail of General Mussharraf and other Arshad was in the security detail of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) General Yusuf Khan. Later Military Intelligence (MI) recovered powerful rockets from his house in Kahuta.
General Mussharraf assigned the task of investigation of the assassination attempts to then Rawalpindi based X Corps Commander Lieutenant General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani. This interaction brought Kayani very close to Mussharraf and later resulted in
his succession to Mussharraf as COAS. The puzzle of the December 14 attack was solved by a chance discovery by military authorities in Quetta. They found that a civilian chap named Mushtaq had links with extremist elements in technical staff of
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) at Quetta and Peshawar bases. Quetta based XII Corps commander Lieutenant General Shahid Hamid called Kayani and informed him about this information. This information led to arrest of several low level PAF technicians
who were involved in the assassination attempt.
The ending of the saga of these two assassination attempts is tragic as well as comic. On April 15, 2012, 150 to 200 heavily armed militants attacked central jail in Bannu freeing over 400 prisoners including a chap named Adnan Rashid. Adnan was
involved in assassination attempt on General Mussharraf. Details of his arrest were never disclosed and there is some confusion. A senior police intelligence official informed me that he was single handedly apprehended by an inspector of Intelligence
Bureau (IB) (this inspector was later killed in a target killing incident). Adnan was a PAF technician and may be member of the group suspected to have links with militants. Later, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement
in assassination attempt on General Mussharraf.
After his escape from Bannu jail, Adnan became another alligator in the swamps of Waziristan and quickly rose among the militant cadres due to his discipline and thorough planning. He was no boy scout and was busy planning high profile strikes. He
established a small elite group and personally trained them for another assassination attempt on General ® Mussharraf. He planned and executed a mass jail break in 2013. On July 29, 2013, over one hundred heavily armed militants stormed central jail
in Dera Ismail Khan freeing around 180 inmates from the center of the city flooded with police, paramilitary forces and headquarters of a whole infantry division of the army. This was another sad day for the state of Pakistan. In July 2014, Adnan was
arrested in South Waziristan when military started a push in Waziristan.
Another key member of the group that planned attack on General Mussharraf was a chap named Mushtaq. He was arrested and kept in the custody of PAF at a base in Rawalpindi. In November 2004, when he came out of shower he saw the guard
sleeping. He put on an overall used by PAF technicians, walked to the main gate where guards waved him and then asked a uniformed PAF soldier on motorcycle to give him a ride to the bus station close by and disappeared. A deeply embarrassed army
vowed to capture him and a special cell in Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was assigned for his capture. Mushtaq was not the one to be happy with this one in a life time chance. He went straight back into the belly of the beast and started planning
another strike on General Mussharraf. ISI got his scent, followed his contacts and he was finally arrested when he was travelling from Lahore to Islamabad.
Pakistan army paid a heavy price in the last decade and loss of such a high number of senior officers is unprecedented in recent military history. With the hind sight of 20/20, it seems that many of these losses were avoidable. One much neglected aspect is
orientation towards personal security. In my own observations, I found that almost all officers use drivers and in some cases guards. Analyzing many assassination attempts, it is quite clear that assassins first shoot the driver thus immobilizing the target.
This quite clearly shows that if you are not driving your own vehicle, you are a sitting duck as you cannot escape from the ambush. Compare this with the notorious case of Raymond Davis who was driving his car alone in a foreign country carrying his
own personal weapon, reacted quickly and shot two who tried to stop his vehicle. If competent and professional, guards can provide some screen but in most cases they fail to protect their charge. Personal security is a special task and simply handing a
weapon to a lazy soldier from the cantonment does not equate to security. I recall attending a high profile wedding in rural Pakistan. I was chatting with one of the guests; a local garrison commander. I observed that he had three armed soldiers in civilian
clothes guarding him. Even casual look showed that they were probably from supply or signals, handed a weapon and asked to accompany the local commander. Few minutes later I noticed that two handed their weapons to the third and probably either
went to rest room or eat food. The lone guard had his own weapon slung over his shoulder while the two weapons of his colleagues were at his feet. I sincerely hoped that garrison commander carried his own personal weapon and was not putting his life
in the hands of his guards. Many officers at the forefront of the operations have been threatened by militants. Officers should be briefed about basic principles of personal security. Two simple measures of driving their own vehicles and carrying personal
weapon will help to keep the initiative in their own hands.
A decade ago, Pakistan army stumbled into a war with an unhealthy mix of confusion and hesitation at the highest level and unpreparedness at all levels thus handing the initiative to the militants. It took several years for the army to take the fight to the
militants. In the last one year, cleaning of some of the swamps of tribal areas and clean up in the cities has dramatically reduced violence all over the country. Now that the militants are on the run, it is important to keep the momentum in tribal areas as
well as cities to keep the citizens of the country soldiers and civilians alike safe.

PAKISTAN AFGHANISTAN AND TERRORISM CLICK ON LINK TO SEE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eCmZh63cYY MY DEAR FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR DR HAMID HUSSAINS ARTICLE WAS PRIMER OF MY THOUGHTS BELOW Marked for Death - Assassination Attempts on Senior Officers of Pakistan Army Hamid Hussain IS APPENDED AT BOTTOM OF THIS POST
  • 5. Dearest Dr Hamid Hussain Your article takes me back to 1857 . Sikandara Rao village itself remained neutral and never joined the rebellion all around it in Aligarh. When his grandfathers unit 5th Light Cavalry was disbanded in Peshawar on no grounds a phrase was coined in the family " never join the army as it is army of the British" . I salute the British officers of private army of English East India Company serving in 5th Light Cavalry when they protested against the regiments disbandment and actually threw their spurs and sabres in the pile of the 5th Light Cavalrys disbanded mens sabres and spurs ! Sultan Khans father joined the Punjab Police and retired as a prosecuting inspector from Hoshiarpur. Sultan Khan was sent to the prestigious English House Boarding School of Aligar established for Talukdars and landlords son and later studied at MAO College. He joined Revenue Service and was Deputy Chief Accounts officer. He later opted for Pakistan and served as Deputy Secretary Ministry of Finance , Member Finance KDA and Member Jute Board Pakistan. He retired in early 1960s. In 1982 five cadets including this scribe sat in silence of ante room at battalion mess 1st Pakistan battalion. Included were a present serving corps commander , Haneef of 68 Long Course , one whose father was killed in 1965 war.The discussion was Islambouli and whether it was possible to kill pakistans military usurper zia on march 1983 passing out of 67 Long Course. In the end votes were cast and all four had cold feet and idea dismissed ! I did not join group photograph of the course with the illegitimate usurper zia immediately after passing out . All along my cadetship and army career I held the view that Zia was a military usurper , hence illegitimate and any attempt to remove him was just resistance . So my interpretation of 17 August 1988 was that it was a just removal of a military usurper . Now the attack on Musharraf carried out by Adnan Rashid. The narrow interpretation is that it was treason. But broader and another valid interpretation is that it was rebellion against a military usurper which raises Adnan Rashids stature higher than Iftikhar Chaudhry or any judge of Pakistan. The line between resistance and rebellion is very narrow. How Musharraf sold FATA to USA as a false centre of gravity and hid all real Taliban in Quetta is also a multifaceted act which may be called PATRIOTISM or DOUBLE DEALING . As FATA as a region was destroyed for no reason. My study meticulously carried out in 2011-14 proves that FATA had nominal links with attacks on US forces in Afghanistan and was falsely painted by Musharraf as real centre of gravity of Terrorism. The attacks on Musharraf in December 2003 cannot be termed as TREASON . They were far more complex . Muslim elite has been using Islam as a condom to get political advantage since Sir Syeds time . This has introduced a confusion of principle in Pakistan which continues.

(HE WAS CONDEMNED BY COURT MARTIAL AND SENTENCE CONFIRMED BY THIRD RATE JUDGES WHOSE ONLY IDEA OF LEGITIMACY IS TO PROTECT THEIR ARSES FROM MUSHARRAF BUMBOOOO) WHAT IS ISLAMIC HISTORY ? KHULAFA KARBALA AND MARTIAL LAW !!!!! THIS IS PAKISTANI LEGTIMACY ! THE TROUBLE STARTS WHEN A GENERAL REMOVES THE GOVERNMENT AND THE TROUBLE STARTS WHEN PAKSTANS ASSEMBLY DID NOT WANT TO MAKE A CONSTITUTION FROM 1947 TO 1956 AS IT WOULD BRING BENGALIS INTO A POWER BY AN ELECTION ! I am not Islamist and I have no interest in Islam but this is my conclusion. Pakistan is not about Islam .It was about economics and in Pakistan legitimacy has always been murky. We continue to live in myths and contradictions.

  • 10. Heroes versus Opportunists-A.H Amin 2007 DECEMBER 24 Posted by pavocavalry 13 Oct 2003 Heroes versus Opportunists A.H Amin Published in the NATION as ” The Last Remedy” When all remedies fail and all wisdom is promiscuously degraded into naked pragmatic opportunism twisted to suit personal ends glorified as idealistic collective aspirations , the last remedy is neither outwardly brilliant , nor apparently wise, but one that alters the course of history at best and instills some semblance of fear of God in the men at the helm of affairs ! Somewhere in the field near Amangarh Ranges in Nowshera one fine winter night in November 1938 , a day before Eid ,a Punjabi Muslim soldier decided that the matter could only be vindicated by a caliber 303 Lee Enfield Rifle ! During the night this indomitable soul ran amok and shot dead four British officers , the first being the commanding officer of the Regiment and also three Indian VCOs ,more loyal than the king ! The British hushed up the incident, as few in Pakistan know today , , keeping in line with foxy old policy of ” conspiracy of silence” ! The unit was quietly disbanded! Nevertheless fear of God was driven home well, albeit backed by the mighty swift force of kinetic energy of 303 caliber projectiles! The assailant was killed, but the example he set was well understood, i.e. do not underestimate the religious sentiments of your men! In yet another incident earlier in 1904 Sepoy Kabul Khan , hailing from a fine P[akhtun tribe , the Abur Rehman Khel sub section of the Bahlolzai section of the illustriopus Mahsud tribe shot dead Captain J.B Bowring the Political SAgent of Waziristan in the middle of the nioght through the head ! In a subsequent dialogue soon after the incident the simple sepoy explained that he had a clear conscience since ” Bowring was sleeping with his feet towards Mecca ” and “therefore I shot him “ ! Later Kabul Khan surrendered , threw his rifle without fear of death and was shot dead , dying with a clean conscience ! In 1984 two valiant Sikhs inscribed another lesson in the sands of time with their blood ! No heavy ranked corps commanders like Brar who slavishly followed orders to storm the Golden Temple despite being a Sikh in name ! These were simple souls , one an ordinary constable Satwant Singh and the other a Sub Inspector Beant Singh ! On the morning of 31st October 1984 at 9.38 precisely these two fearless men pumped seven bullets of a Sten Gun and revolver into the vital organs of Durga Devi ! No missiles test fired at unknown test sites but simple bullets which did the job which no missiles may ever ironically do ! The men died but the message that they gave in martyrdom lives !
  • 11. In 1978 Egyptian president Anwar Sadat a complexed man inflicted with a highly dangerous disease ofcshameless opportunism betrayed the Arab Muslim cause at Camp David ! This betrayal was avenged by a lieutenant name Khalid Islambouli in 1981 ! (Bible-Mark 8:36).Compare this with the shameless opportunism of so many Suhartos and Sadats , the apparently wise men who lost wars but ruled their own people with help of Western powers ! I hold that militarily 1973 War was won by Israelis ! Perhaps the only war that the Israeils may lose is the present one against the guerrilla forces of Islam ! What is the life of a man ? Pilot Officer V.A Roseware who perished in the Battlle of Britain in 1940 explained this enigma in a letter written to his mother shortly before his death at the age of 25 0r 26 in the following words ” The universe is so vast and so ageless that the lifec of one man can only be justified by the measure of his sacrifice” ! In Armughan I Hijaz the poet philosopher Iqbal says ” Why there is no storm in your river ? Why your ego is nota true Muslim? It is absoolutely useless to complain against the destiny determined by God ? Why are you notb the destiny of God yourself ? “ The Kamikaze pilots who crashed theior planes sacrificing their lives in second world war had the following motto ” Like a blossom today then scattered , life is like a delicate flower ! How can one expect the fragrance to last forver ? “ When will leaders of Islam get out of the whirlpool of cheap existence and opportunism ! Bending obsequiously , and clicking their heels while shaking hands with US assistant secretaries of state ! Acclaiming their masters and basking in the glory of a passive foreign policy which has divided the Muslim world , facilitating the US task to defeat all Islamic forces piecemeal , one by one while , many others run after carrots suspended in mid air by USA as baits !
  • 12. When I sometimes sleep a student of mine in Armour school shakes my shoulder in a dream ! Tiwana then a captain as I saw him in 1990-91 , later embracing ,martyrdom in Kargil in 1999 as a major tells me ” Sir I am very unhappy , do you know how we died , do you know what happened to us , we had volunteered to fight for the cause of Islam” ! What is the use of a top heavy military bureaucracy which seeks glory in playing the part of the pragmatic docile subsidiary vassal ! Why do common people become suicide bombers ! It is so because conventional armies of the Muslim world have to failed to do their job in battle , yet they enjoy moviong around with swagger and bravado claiming that they are the most martial military machines in the history of mankind ! The pleasant future that the US policy makers may have promised the relatively naieve Pakistani policy makers is essentially only a carrot to make the mule do its job ! When the first shots of this new war were fired, Pakistan army was neither trained nor prepared for the conflict. Confusion, complacency and utter incompetence at all levels gave an upper hand to the extremists all over the country. First, the government lost the control of tribal areas followed by the loss of the large swaths of the settled division of Malakand. Militants established themselves in tribal regions and from there launched forays into major cities. They abducted, killed and bombed civilians and soldiers alike all over the country sending the whole nation into a deep depression.
  • 13. Police and paramilitary forces faced the brunt of the militant onslaught. Many soldiers and disproportionately large numbers of young officers of army were killed and wounded in clashes with militants. Militants embarked on a deliberate course of targeting senior officers of security forces including army. Many senior police, paramilitary and army officers were targeted by militants. This was a multipronged strategy with objectives of eliminating individual officers to shake morale of officer corps and on psychological plane sending the signal to general public that security forces couldn’t protect them. On June 10, 2004, the convoy of Karachi Corps Commander Lieutenant General (later General and VCOAS) Ahsan Saleem Hayat came under attack that resulted in death of eight soldiers. Ahsan’s driver and co-driver were shot killing co-driver on the spot while driver was seriously wounded and later died. Driver’s foot remained on the accelerator and car kept moving but in a zigzag fashion. Ahsan’s ADC seated behind the driver got hold of the steering wheel and got out of the ambush. Attacker’s plan was to first detonate an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) stopping Ahsan’s car and then spray it with bullets to finish the job. He is the senior most army officer killed by militants. On November 19, 2008, retired Major General Amir Faisal Alvi was shot and killed in Islamabad. Alvi had served as GOC of army’s elite Special Forces Special Services Group (SSG) and involved in many early operations in tribal areas. On October 22, 2009, Brigadier Moinuddin Ahmad along with his driver was shot dead in Islamabad. A week later, another Brigadier Waqar Ahmad Malik was shot in Islamabad. He was director Defence Services Guards (DSG). On November 05, 2009, Brigadier Sohail and his driver were shot and injured when their car was ambushed in Islamabad. On December 04, 2009, terrorists attacked a mosque in Rawalpindi cantonment used by soldiers and their family members killing more than forty people including several children. Two suicide bombers blew themselves inside the mosque while other two threw hand grenades and sprayed the congregation with automatic rifle fire. This was one of the most devastating attacks on army fraternity. The dead included Major General Bilal Omar, Brigadier Abdul Rauf, Lieutenant Colonel Manzoor Saeed and Lieutenant Colonel Fakhar ul Hassan. The only son of then Peshawar Corps Commander Lieutenant General Masood Aslam was also among the dead as well as sons of Major General Nasim Riaz, Brigadier Mumtaz, Brigadier Sadiq, Colonel Qaiser, Colonel Shukran and Colonel Shabbir. Fathers of Major General Awais Mustafa and Colonel Farooq Awan were also among the dead. Colonel Kaleem Zubair lost his father as well as his son in the carnage. This was the most heart breaking tragedy until militants trumped their own brutality when in December 2014 they attacked Army Public School in Peshawar killing around 150 students as well as many teacher. On September 07, 2011, two suicide bombers targeted the residence of Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Frontier Corps (FC) – Baluchistan Brigadier Farrukh Shahzad. In a devastating precision and coordination, first suicide bomber rammed the explosive laden car targeting FC vehicles waiting to escort the DIG-FC who was coming out of his residence killing several soldiers. Five minutes later rushing through the chaos, second suicide bomber was able to barge through the damaged gate and partially demolished walls of the residence and detonated his explosives. It was a planned attack and later militants released a video of the attack. Son-in-Law of then Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Tariq Majeed; the senior most officer of Pakistani armed forces was abducted by militants and kept in Waziristan for several years. He was from a wealthy family and militants asked for a large sum of money as well as release of some high profile militants under army’s custody. He was released but the terms of his release are not known. On October 11, 2012, Brigadier Tahir Masood who had retired a week before from the media wing of Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) was kidnapped right from the heart of Islamabad while his driver was killed. To date, he has not been recovered and believed to be in the custody of militants in Islamabad. There were two major assassination attempts on then Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and President General Pervez Mussharraf in December 2003. The first attack was on December 14, 2003 when terrorists planted large amount of explosives under a bridge. When Mussharraf’s convoy reached the bridge, it was blown but no one was killed. Over five hundred pounds of explosives were placed on the farther side of the bridge and explosive charge was detonated by an operative on the site via a telephone call to the receiver attached to the explosive charge. Terrorists hoped that by this placement the oncoming car of General Mussharraf would either hit the concrete flying in car’s direction or ram into the exposed steel bars. In case of missing these two eventualities, the car may plunge into the huge gap in the bridge slamming down in the bed (see the pictures below). The operator in an effort to be not too visible positioned himself in such a way that obscured his direct visual contact with the convoy. The skin of his face blew off clean from skeletal structure preserving features. An army plastic surgeon reconstructed it and it matched the picture on burned out identity card. His cell phone was damaged but SIM was intact and from the calls as well as his diary recovered from his home provided some clues. The driver of second car was a Pathan named Khaleeq. The tracking of this piece of the investigation led to discovery that two soldiers of elite Special Services Group (SSG) were helping militants. One named Dogar had served in the security detail of General Mussharraf and other Arshad was in the security detail of Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) General Yusuf Khan. Later Military Intelligence (MI) recovered powerful rockets from his house in Kahuta. General Mussharraf assigned the task of investigation of the assassination attempts to then Rawalpindi based X Corps Commander Lieutenant General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani. This interaction brought Kayani very close to Mussharraf and later resulted in his succession to Mussharraf as COAS. The puzzle of the December 14 attack was solved by a chance discovery by military authorities in Quetta. They found that a civilian chap named Mushtaq had links with extremist elements in technical staff of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) at Quetta and Peshawar bases. Quetta based XII Corps commander Lieutenant General Shahid Hamid called Kayani and informed him about this information. This information led to arrest of several low level PAF technicians who were involved in the assassination attempt.
  • 14. The ending of the saga of these two assassination attempts is tragic as well as comic. On April 15, 2012, 150 to 200 heavily armed militants attacked central jail in Bannu freeing over 400 prisoners including a chap named Adnan Rashid. Adnan was involved in assassination attempt on General Mussharraf. Details of his arrest were never disclosed and there is some confusion. A senior police intelligence official informed me that he was single handedly apprehended by an inspector of Intelligence Bureau (IB) (this inspector was later killed in a target killing incident). Adnan was a PAF technician and may be member of the group suspected to have links with militants. Later, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in assassination attempt on General Mussharraf. After his escape from Bannu jail, Adnan became another alligator in the swamps of Waziristan and quickly rose among the militant cadres due to his discipline and thorough planning. He was no boy scout and was busy planning high profile strikes. He established a small elite group and personally trained them for another assassination attempt on General ® Mussharraf. He planned and executed a mass jail break in 2013. On July 29, 2013, over one hundred heavily armed militants stormed central jail in Dera Ismail Khan freeing around 180 inmates from the center of the city flooded with police, paramilitary forces and headquarters of a whole infantry division of the army. This was another sad day for the state of Pakistan. In July 2014, Adnan was arrested in South Waziristan when military started a push in Waziristan. Another key member of the group that planned attack on General Mussharraf was a chap named Mushtaq. He was arrested and kept in the custody of PAF at a base in Rawalpindi. In November 2004, when he came out of shower he saw the guard sleeping. He put on an overall used by PAF technicians, walked to the main gate where guards waved him and then asked a uniformed PAF soldier on motorcycle to give him a ride to the bus station close by and disappeared. A deeply embarrassed army vowed to capture him and a special cell in Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) was assigned for his capture. Mushtaq was not the one to be happy with this one in a life time chance. He went straight back into the belly of the beast and started planning another strike on General Mussharraf. One much neglected aspect is orientation towards personal security. Compare this with the notorious case of Raymond Davis who was driving his car alone in a foreign country carrying his own personal weapon, reacted quickly and shot two who tried to stop his vehicle. If competent and professional, guards can provide some screen but in most cases they fail to protect their charge. Personal security is a special task and simply handing a weapon to a lazy soldier from the cantonment does not equate to security. I recall attending a high profile wedding in rural Pakistan. I was chatting with one of the guests; a local garrison commander. I observed that he had three armed soldiers in civilian clothes guarding him. Even casual look showed that they were probably from supply or signals, handed a weapon and asked to accompany the local commander. Few minutes later I noticed that two handed their weapons to the third and probably either went to rest room or eat food. The lone guard had his own weapon slung over his shoulder while the two weapons of his colleagues were at his feet. I sincerely hoped that garrison commander carried his own personal weapon and was not putting his life in the hands of his guards. Many officers at the forefront of the operations have been threatened by militants. Officers should be briefed about basic principles of personal security. Two simple measures of driving their own vehicles and carrying personal weapon will help to keep the initiative in their own hands. A decade ago, Pakistan army stumbled into a war with an unhealthy mix of confusion and hesitation at the highest level and unpreparedness at all levels thus handing the initiative to the militants. It took several years for the army to take the fight to the militants. In the last one year, cleaning of some of the swamps of tribal areas and clean up in the cities has dramatically reduced violence all over the country. Now that the militants are on the run, it is important to keep the momentum in tribal areas as well as cities to keep the citizens of the country soldiers and civilians alike safe.
