  • 35. Translation testrun „Visual works“, feedback:
    • Continued, daily work recommended, preferably half-day
    • Finding of German terms:
      • For a domain specialist, equivalents are in many cases obvious
      • Consulting dictionaries and Wikipedia is always a regular step of the work.
      • Often specialist literature, since general dictionaries happen to be inexact.
    • Indication of sources:
      • Consultation of online sources is time-saving.
      • Sources don‘t indicate translation, but use of German term

  • 51.
    • - Jutta Held/Norbert Schneider, Grundzüge der Kunstwissenschaft, Köln 2007, 76
    • - Dictionary
    • Langenscheidt Handwörterbuch (2001):
    • sculpture I s. Plastik f:
    • a) Bildhauerkunst f,
    • b) Skulptur f, Bildhauerwerk n;
An important distinction is encountered: „ Skulptur“ is employed for art objects made out of hard materials, which are carved away (by chisel etc.), like wood, stone, ivory etc. „ Plastik“ is used for art objects made out of soft materials, which are added to form an object, like clay, plaster. It is also used for moulded objects like bronze sculptures etc. Example: sculpture (visual work) (ID: 300047090) AAT in German
  • 52.
    • Skulptur / Plastik versus Bildwerk
    • Although in German language, „Skulptur“ and „Plastik“ are often used as synonyms and „Sculpture“ is often translated as „Skulptur, Plastik“, it still seems necessary to maintain the precise difference.
synonym in - MOT Langenscheidt Muret-Sanders Großwörterbuch Englisch 1.0 (2004): Sculpture 1. Skulptur f , Plastik f : a) Bildhauerkunst f , Bildhauerei f b) Bildhauerwerk n   Oberbegriff Plastik - OSWD, refers to Plastik (Skulptur, Bildwerk siehe Plastik) Example: sculpture (visual work) (ID: 300047090) AAT in German
  • 53.
    • In the AAT, „Sculpture“ is a concept as well as a node label. We translated „Bildwerk “ (ID 300047090), which refers to sculptural, threedimensional works in art. In the scope notes, we refer to both terms Skulptur und Plastik .
    • Problem: Because the term „Bildwerk“ is composed of „Bild“ and „Werk“, in common German language this term is sometimes used for images, too. Its scope notes are important to explain its meaning. A qualifier might be helpful.
    • (see Duden, Sinn- und sachverwandte Wörter, reference to „painting“).
See - Brockhaus Bildwerk, dreidimensionale Darstellung, wie Skulptur, Plastik, Relief (reference to Bildhauerkunst) - MOT Langenscheidt Muret-Sanders Großwörterbuch Englisch 1.0 (2004). Example: sculpture (visual work) (ID: 300047090) AAT in German
  • 54. Example: sculpture (visual work) (ID: 300047090) Solution 1: sculpture (visual work) Bildwerk … .Skulptur …… carvings (visual works) … .Plastik …… casts (sculpture) Solution 2: sculpture (visual work) Bildwerk (Skulptur / Plastik) ...carvings (visual works) … casts (sculpture) AAT in German

    • English „bust“ (ID 300047457) and German „Büste“ is different:
    • Engl.
    • Bust (filed under figures (representations)):
    • Representations of only the head and shoulders of a human figure
    • => sculptural and pictorial representation
    • German
    • 1. Büste (sculptural representation only)
    • Die plastische Darstellung eines Menschen vom Scheitel bis zur Schulterpartie oder als Halbfigur bis zur Taille, in Vollplastik oder als Relief, wird als Büste bezeichnet. Zur Darstellung dieser Partie im Bild siehe unter "Brustbild".
    • 2. Brustbild (pictorial representation), similar to bust, filed under figures (representations)
Example: busts (ID: 300047457) AAT in German
  • 56.
    • Which general approach is to be taken
      • Choose exact terms as preferred, although they might not be common?
      • Introduce hierarchy refinements or not?
