    • E-governance is the use of information technology in governance. In other words, it is an exercise to convert government services into IT enabled services means that government must be able to use IT extensively in all their functions. 2

    • E-governance measures in Passenger Business - PRS Computerisation of passenger Reservation has been a success story for Indian Railways. Delhi CalcuttaMumbai SecBad In 1984-85, a Pilot Project was implemented at Chennai Delhi and later replicated at four other sites Secunderabad, Chennai, Kolkata & Mumbai. System set up at these regional centres took care of trains within their area of jurisdiction. 9

    • PRS – A E-GOVERNANCE FLAGSHIP“If we take stock of all e-governance initiatives kicked off so far, there arefew success stories. One very successful IT implementation is the passenger reservation system by Indian Railways. There’s perhaps no other case where we can talk about e-governance on such a large and productive scale.”“Perhaps the only long standing positive example of application successfully of computers and information technology is the passenger reservation system in the Railways.     • Unreserved Ticketing System-UTSThe work load involved inprinting , accounting and Indian railways introduced UTSissuing tickets to this mega to improve customer satisfaction, revenuesegment has been a difficult generation, accounting, andtask reporting capabilities and reduce fraud Tickets can be issued upto System is proposed to be extended 3 days in advance progressively on all zonal railways Indian railways have received the prestigious computer world honour 2004 for UTS that has improved customers’ travelling experience and provided operational efficiency 16
    • FREIGHT TRANSPORT BUSINESS Accounts for nearly 70% of IR’s revenue. Railways share approx 40% of national transportation market. In financial year 2003-04, Railways moved 557.39 m tonnes of originating revenue earning traffic with average lead-684 km. 38.65 million tonnes higher than previous year’s loading. Target - 590 m tonnes for 2004-05 17
