• Scale up -- the problem is loss of human individual agency
What do we focus on?: trade, environment, population, technology, politics, culture?
• Since Hans Rosling started us with population, let’s put it in a larger context
• So, in all, we can see a significant global population boom that is generally constant and exponential during the anthropocene
• We can see this same information to slightly different effect using a chart
--you’ll notice the devastating effects on Africa of the slave trade and imperialism
--you’ll also notice the devastation of the collapse of the Qing Empire, the civil wars that led up to it as well as the civil war and Sino-Japanese wars of the 1930s and 1940s
• The early modern world was already a global world connected by
--trade (silver flow from Americas to Europe to Asia)
--migration (voluntary and forced)
--ecological exchange (flora, fauna, microbiological)
• Cold War and Humans’ Imprint on Geological Strata
• Great Divergence
--causes dispute (see H109 Lecture 5)
• Great Acceleratin
